There is no evidence, at this point, that there is any food tampering involved. It looks like an issue of tainted wheat gluten from a single source that 17 out of 20 pet food manufactures use. Amazing how there is no difference between the utility grade and premium grade canned/pouched pet foods. You can pay $0.23 a can like I do, or pay over a $1.00 a can. The problem is a complete lack of internal quality control across the entire spectrum of pet food suppliers. American manufacturing gave lip service to "total quality systems" in the 90's. "Lean Manufacturing" is the current mantra now. My last employer had five quality technicians in the 90's. Now they have two people who are hopelessly unable to inspect incoming or in process work. Apparently the effort to save another penny or two on the pet food "gravy" has resulted in a massive recall that is going to cost Menu Foods and it's customers, tens of millions of dollars. Dead pets are the new Quality Control system. BTW - the big Grey cat cost us over $150.00 at the vet Saturday. He got an electrolyte IV and blood tests. We are anxiously awaiting the blood test results due on Monday. I just hope he suffered no permanent damage.
The problem is a complete lack of internal quality control across the entire spectrum of pet food suppliers. Well said. I've long suspected this; the Diamond dog food recall solidified my suspicions, and latest recall is certainly no surprise. The pet food manufacturing process is as sick as some of pets who have consumed their contaminated products.
