Romney said he believes that undocumented immigrants living in the United States should receive no "special pathway" to legalization, but neither would he automatically deport them should they declare themselves to the government.
"The first thing I'd like them to do is to register, so I know how many there are, and what their circumstances are,'' including whether they have had children born in America, how long they have been here or if they hold jobs, he said in a telephone interview with The Chronicle from San Diego, where he was fundraising as part of a two-day state swing. "And on that basis, we can see who would receive temporary employment visas and who would instead be required to return home.''
Romney, 60, the former Massachusetts' governor, is a strong fundraiser and is considered one of the top tier of Republican candidates for president with Sen. John McCain of Arizona and former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
Romney said illegal immigrants in the United States "should be treated just like those in other countries,'' meaning "there should be no special pathway for illegal immigrants here.''
"They can apply for a green card. They can apply for citizenship just like anyone else,'' he said. But "there should be no advantage in citizenship or permanent residency'' for the undocumented.
Romney, during his interview with The Chronicle, discussed a wide range of issues including the importance of California moving its presidential primary early in the campaign season to Feb. 5, making it part of what appears to be almost a national primary...

Anchor babies have never been intended to determine citizenship of the parents. The parents and the babies should return to Mexico. And when the child turns eighteen, he can chose to come here as an American citizen.
Well, the first thing Hunter ALREADY did, is force feed the gov't to start building a double fence.
Romney is sounding like a tap dance.
Seems simple to me. All he has to do is check the food stamp rolls, WIC rolls, School rolls, welfare rolls, assisted housing rolls, emergency medicaid rolls, hospital ER's. Anything "FREE" they have already registered. Why didn't he do this when he was governor? We would all like to know hows many freebies they collect.
This issue is going to be moot by the next presidential election. Both houses of Congress and the president want some form of amnesty bill. That means it's going to happen- it's just a question of the details.
Well Mitt, if ya don't think illegals should be deported then ya just lost my interest and vote there pal.
NEXT.
"Romney said he believes that undocumented immigrants living in the United States should receive no "special pathway" to legalization, but neither would he automatically deport them should they declare themselves to the government"
Why should they register?
He's trying to play on both sides of the issue, hoping that voters won't notice. He "sounds" compassionate... isn't that all that matters?/sarc
So, someone tell me.....once they are registered what are we gonna do with them? Nothing? Then what is the point?
Romney must be smoking something. Why would illegals register? They have broken our existing laws? Adding another requirement won't change anything. What is the penalty for non-compliance?
Stay home Romney! And that goes for Rudy too!
What a steaming, stinking pile of crap. Just allowing the "undocumented" to apply for green cards and citizenship while living and working in the US gives them an advantage.
If that happens, this country is finished.
The first thing I'd like them to do is to register, so I know how many there are, quote Mitt
I don't think I have seen such a nieave comment.
Living here in San Diego at ground zero of illegals,
these people are not and will not register regardless
of what law are pass.
Mitt having lived in privilege all his life and in
forms of isolation of the real world doesn't have a clue.
Instead of spending 2 years on mission in France, he should have spent it in real world America.
That is step one.
Well, we don't want it to happen here in San Diego.
Maybe your town can be the illegal hub and we can send the tens of thousands in my city to yours.
It is costing us mega millions a year.
Mitt Romney strongly supports the proposal to extend security fencing at the U.S.-Mexico border, the legislation drafted by Rep. Hunter and approved by Congress. Romney would support other measures to help seal the border as a vital part of his immigration reform plan.
Romney would deport illegal alien convicted criminals and all illegals who refuse to get off public welfare assistance as part of his immigration reform plan.
I think he read my plan.
It is true he isn't calling for automatic deportation. He is however saying they will be evaluated, and based on some criteria many of them will be deported.
I need to see what his criteria is, probably not as strict as mine but the devil is in the details.
Except of course for those who think we should throw every illegal out and start over with legal ones. I don't agree with that position, and apparently neither does Mitt Romney.
I wonder if Duncan Hunter really would do it either. If we were able to get 12 million illegals to show up tomorrow and report themselves, would Duncan Hunter require all 12 million of them to leave the country that day?
I'd rather have 12 million illegals registered so I know where they are but in my country, than 12 million NOT registered that I manage to find 10,000 of them a month and throw them out.
