Hetch Hetchy plan has new ally
David Whitney

Environmentalists long to drain the reservoir that gives San Francisco its water, and thus restore a scenic valley. Rep. Dan Lungren says the idea's worth studying - but it has some powerful foes.

HETCH HETCHY THEN: The Tuolumne River meanders through the green, pristine valley a half-century ago.

Rep. Dan Lungren, R-Gold River, said Thursday that it is time to look seriously at restoring Hetch Hetchy Valley in Yosemite National Park by draining the reservoir that has been a source of clean water for San Francisco for more than 80 years.

The conservative Republican and former California attorney general said he is convinced that the 300-foot-deep reservoir could be drained without costing San Francisco its water supply, and that doing so would add a spectacular companion to Yosemite Valley in the internationally treasured park.

"Where else could we produce that?" Lungren said in an interview. "Where else in the United States would we be able to give that to our children and our grandchildren?"

Completely unenthused was Sen. Dianne Feinstein, San Francisco's former mayor and a senior Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee.

As chair of the committee's key subcommittee funding the Interior Department, Feinstein has the power to single-handedly block the study money.

"I will not support efforts to eliminate this precious resource," she said in a statement Thursday.

Lungren acknowledged that he has some powerful opponents, who he assumes include House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco. Pelosi's office did not respond with a comment.

IRONIC. DEMOFASCISTS who are "Supporting the Environment" are against it when it comes to water for their hometown.

Maybe Lundy is playing their stupid game, without drinking water they'll all have to drink from the toilet. Can't do much more damage, the damage is already done. Just don't look for the military to bail your sorry asses out HA!

PING!!!

See what Tom Sullivan has given us? As if Schwartzenfrauder wasn't enough, he also used his highly rated radio talk show to push lilly livered Lungren over the top!!!

This is getting truly disgusting!!!

I'm confused Wasp.

The crux of the article appears to be that Lungren is floating this balloon in an attempt to blackmail Feinstein into supporting Auburn.

Owha... Tagoo... Seiam!!! (can you break the code?)

"There may also be some political mischief behind Lungren's endorsement. He is a strong advocate of constructing a multipurpose dam on the American River at Auburn.

"Many who oppose draining Hetch Hetchy, including Feinstein, also oppose construction of an Auburn dam. But the arguments for Auburn -- the need for water storage as global warming worsens the forecast for rain and snowfall in the Sierra, and the valuable production of clean hydropower -- are also the reasons typically cited for opposing drainage of Hetch Hetchy."

Wow!!! They really buried that clinker deep in the article that was only excerpted until you linked the rest and goaded me into drilling down for more!!!

Oh my!!! This is RICH!!! The 3 bilious biches, Boxer, Feinstein and Pelosi... ALL 3 OF 'EM ARE GETTIN HOISTED ON THEIR OWN PETARD!!! (wait! do females have a petard?)

My Momma always said, "it's always darkest before the dawn." How sweet it is!!! They're STUCK! They're HIGH-CENTERED!! Somebody told 'em to go screw themselves and now they have!!! Ha Ha ha!!! I grow weak and out of breath with laughin an wheezin... (42 years of smokin has taken it's toll)

Thank you Amerigomag. I had become so jaded and stilted and synical that I wasn't even gonna go look.

I still don't trust Lundgren since he wouldn't take the side of Donald Scott who was shot and killed by LA county deputies under the pretense he was growin marijuana in his oak tree, so's the Santa Monica Mountains CONservancy could steal his beautiful property!!! (anybody else remember that mockery of justice and the rule of law mixed with the rape of property rights?

Now, I'll bet you're even more confused, right??? (grin)

Finish the Auburn Dam, the cost will be a lot less than rebuilding the levies and it will act as a saftey valve to protect them.

The river rafters and enviros can go stuff it!

Yes, the Democratics are hypocrites.

But, this idea is idiotic.

Whatever the arguments were against flooding this valley before the dam was put in were, they are moot today. There is no way to undo what was done in any reasonable amount of time.

1st question....

How many reservoirs have been built over the last 25 years?

How much has California's population grown in that time?

How long can California survive a drought today vs 1976?

Curious!

I'm sorry, but you cannot get away with asking 3 entire questions under the fake-out heading of "1st question," only! (grin) You must properly enumerate the anticipated number of questions you are going to be asking us... THEN you may go about your business of quizzing us to the power of 3!!!

You don't understand the Jerry Brown, Gray Davis, GovernMental EnvironMental, NIMBY, BANANA crowds very well, do you?

Don't you understand their only solution to population growth is suffocation of economic progress (jobs) by way of water shortages and clogged traffic and schools?

I see you need some more time in the DemonicraTICK Party's high holy EnvironMental re-education camps till you get fear cramps in your brain!!! (a condition brought on by severe liberal "Born Again Pagan" brain farts!)

And as for you, DaleReed... You just gotta stop bein so dad blamed pragmatic and practical about the need for infrastucture! Don't you know that "if you build it, they will COME?"

Nothing brings a smile to my face when a conservative comes up with a plan that takes reality and shoves it down the lying pie holes of liberals like Pelosi, Boxer and FineSwine.

This is great. Remove the main water supply of San Francisco and have they pay the going rates for water. That might make Gay Frisco a ghost town in a few years if it happens. Then Pelosi would lose her seat, and Boxer and FineSwine would be in political trouble.

If the traitors to our party enable $inator Hildebea$t to become president to really teach us a lesson, there will be a whole lot of seasoned Freepers thrown into the endangered species list with no penalties for shooting or killing us.
