"No. They understand it perfectly. They just want to take away the right declared in the second amendment."

Nailed it.

The lesson I take is that we should not trust Republicans with our vote if they are willing to nominate judges who are hostile to gun rights.

Yes, because the Dem-nominated judges and Justices are so much better on this issue (and a whole host of others).

Just a reminder...Justice Thomas was nominated by Bush 41. I voted against Bush 41 in '92 for a number of reasons (one of which was the '89 import ban), but they boil down to "because I was too politically immature to understand what I was doing" (not that it mattered much in my then-state of NJ, but the principle still applies). BTW, Scalia, Roberts & Alito are also Republican appointees - and now look at Clinton's (Dem, in case you forgot) choices: Ginsberg and Breyer. Do you think that those last 2 will vote pro-2nd Amendment? I don't think so (though Ginsberg may possibly be a big surprise, should the Parker case get there on appeal), and they'll certainly vote for the "Living Constitution" choice in 98% of all other cases.

Please don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Fight like Hell in the primaries for your preferred candidate, but then vote in November to stop the greater of 2 evils...because that's the only choice you'll have. Voting 3rd party or staying home got us Bill Clinton. Without the '92 win, Hillary would be Bill's ex-wife and a rich, corrupt lawyer somewhere, not the Senator from NY and the front-runner for the Dem nomination. Think about it!
