...And you asked about amnesty -- look, amnesty is not going to fly. There is not going to be automatic citizenship, it just won't work. People in the United States don't support that, and neither do I, nor will kicking people out of the United States work. It's not practical. It is not a realistic solution. Some may articulate that, but it's empty talk. And so, therefore, there's got to be a middle ground, a reasonable way to deal with the 12 million people or so that have been in our country for a period of time. And that's where a lot of the discussions are taking place. And I think we can find a rational way forward, somewhere in between automatic citizenship and kicking people out of the country. It's in our interests we do so. We are a nation of law, and therefore, if we can change the law for the better, we ought to do so...

So, talk of enforcing our laws is just that, "empty talk". I had to go to the source to make sure it was Bush and not Calderon speaking.

Maybe we should all stop paying our taxes and then wait to see what happens!

Apparently we have to DO something. Our emails, letters, and opinions are just "empty talk".

what a demoralizing, defective leader
we are a nation of laws, so let's change the law to make something legal in retrospect that was illegal when the acts were committed
geez, wonder if that will fly for murder one day?

Hear that? That's the sound of President Bush's supporters backing away from him.
I'm pretty surprised that Bush is this blunt. Then again, he has nothing to lose - he's not running for President again, so it's no surprise to see his true colors.
Perhaps this is his "legacy".
Be interesting to see if his defenders pop into this thread and how they can spin this, lol.

Bush says amnesty won't fly. He'll just call it something else like "temporary permanent guest worker".
I supported Bush before he was elected Gov of Texas. I supported him for president and voted for him each time. I sincerely regret doing so. I'm getting to the point where I can't stand to hear him speak or read what he has said. I don't think he has the the interests of the US first in his mind and I'm none to happy to see that we have injured soldiers coming home and not being taken care of.

What has happened to President Bush????
He was talking about being really close with Mexico back when he was Governor of Texas. Don't be surprised.
Don't worry though, most people will ignore this thread, because if they didn't read it, it didn't happen.

And if they do read it and are outraged, it'll only result in "empty talk" and they can be safely ignored by the people they elected.

Well, I know he was very close to Vicente Fox but...this has gone too far and...I am crushed. I never expected this from our President. Never.

He's been dropping hints for years. Plenty of FReepers have brought it up over the past several years, only to be shot down by Bush's defenders. The "Guest Worker" program he wanted should have been a very clear sign of where he was headed.
I can understand your feelings though - there's probably a lot of people who have no idea just how far he wants to take this.

I am crushed. I never expected this from our President. Never.I see by your sign up date you missed much of the debate before the 2000 election. Many of us have been referred to one issue "unappeasables" for years because of Bush's "brown" nose when it comes to Mexico.

Don't worry - all of those people who would rather call us names than listen to what Bush was saying are now covering their eyes because they don't want to believe this.
I do expect one or two to try and spin this. Should be fun to watch.

Note the new tagline effective today.

Perhaps President Bush is under hypnosis.
Certainly his administration commrades are selling out the country to the North American Union so what is all his verbiage about? Could it really be just duplicity and mugging for the cameras for the sake of people who don't listen to what he says anyway?

We are a nation of law, and therefore, if we can change the law for the better, we ought to do so... Translation: We are a nation of laws, but if you don't want to follow them, I'll change then for you.
Maybe we can use that rationale on our tax laws.
