Some quotes about the controversy involving the fired U.S. attorneys:

___

"Again, all political appointees can be removed by the president of the United States for any reason. I stand by the decision, and I think it was a right decision." — Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

___

"As a general matter, some two years ago, I was made aware that there was a request from the White House as to the possibility of replacing all the United States attorneys. That was immediately rejected by me. I felt that that was a bad idea and it was disruptive." — Gonzales.

___

"If somebody calls you up and says, 'We have a concern that there may be a failure to investigate possible violations of the law,' it's appropriate to pass that on. ... You're not making recommendations, you're not issuing pressure, you're not saying, 'Fire somebody.'" — White House spokesman Tony Snow.

___

"As attorney general, he is the defender and protector of the Constitution of the United States. He takes that oath. Before that he was the counsel to the president. Perhaps those lines have blurred in his mind." — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

___

"It appears he is over his head in this job." — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

___

"Mr. President, did the attorney general not know that eight U.S. attorneys were to be fired? If he didn't know, he shouldn't be attorney general." — Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.

___

"I'm calling on the president of the United States and the attorney general to restore Dan Bogden's reputation." — Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., referring to the U.S. attorney in Las Vegas who was dismissed.

> What is the controversy? BUSH could fire everyone if he wanted to.

The controversy seems to be twofold. First, some butt covering chair polisher decided to lie about the departing attorneys and sully their reputations by saying they were being let go for poor performance. This pissed them off (understandably) and resulted in them calling in some markers to get their side heard.

Second, the tax leeching ballot lice in the Capitol realized that in their haste to be idiots last year they allowed to pass in the reauthorization of the PATRIOT act a little passage that authorizes the Attorney General to appoint "interim" US attorneys **indefinitely**. A lot of the squawking is clustered around correcting this bit of unbelievable incompetence on the congress critters' part.

Never liked Gonzalez anyway, but I think that now with Hillary asking for his head on a plate the last thing to do is to have him resign. With this exception: His resignation should be allowed under one circumstance - that as his last act he fire the remaining U.S. Attorneys who didn't get dismissed with the recently departed. Might as well stir the pot and demonstrate Presidential power. The replace Gonzalez with someone who knows how to talk back to the Senate and House blowhards.

Are US attorneys REALLY so fragile that they can't even have a phone conversation with a politician asking about something? Sam Watterson has fights on any average episode of Law and Order and he doesn't cry about it.
