Poll: Giuliani leads the GOP pack (& more on conservative endorsements Olson and Vitter)
CNN ^ | March 12, 2007 | CNN

Giuliani is the preferred candidate for 34 percent of likely Republican voters, according to the poll. Giuliani has a double-digit lead over his nearest rival, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who is the choice candidate for 18 percent of potential Republican voters.

Conservative endorsements

In a move to attract conservatives skeptical of his position on social issues such as gun control, abortion rights and same-sex civil unions, Giuliani's campaign Monday announced endorsements from Sen. David Vitter, R-Louisiana, and former Solicitor General Ted Olson.

"Obviously, I disagree with Rudy on some significant social issues, and these are very important to me and to many people I represent," said Vitter, a vocal opponent of abortion, gay marriage and gun control.

"But after numerous personal meetings with the mayor, it's very clear to me that he's not running for president to advance any liberal social agenda," he said.

Olson, who served with Giuliani in the Reagan Justice Department, said he believes the former mayor "will appoint the kind of judges that we expect in this country -- people that respect the rule of law and the role of judges and who interpret the laws and interpret the Constitution, instead of judges who want to make policy."

As I've said, no President can stop abortion. Even if Roe is overturned it will go back to the states and most states won't ban abortions. And if a woman can't get an abortion in her state, we live in the transportation age, she can travel to another state that she can have the abortion performed. We will never stop abortions. That's why I consider electability more important than a candidate's views on abortion. Anyways, we'll just have to agree to disagree for now. Good night.

I'm pro-Rudy so I can't speak for the anti-Rudy crowd but I would love a Rudy/Thompson ticket.

So, senator Vitter's endorsement means nothing to you.

Vitter is my senator and you must not know much about him if you think his endorsement is some gold star. His performance during hurricane Katrina was sickening. When we needed a strong Republican leader the most, he acted like a sockpuppet for Blanco and Landrieu.

I would never vote for this man again, so why would I vote for anyone he endorsed.

"You've got to REGULATE consistent with the Second Amendment"

Rudy G.

HANNITY: How do you feel about the Brady bill and assault ban?

GIULIANI: I was in favor of that as part of the crime bill.

Tell me, are conservatives generally pro regulation of the 2nd or the opposite.

And if a Democratic congress decides to draft some new abomination of firearms regulation, would Rudy sign it?

Vitter and Olson get on the Rudy bandwagon; huh? Gee; how quickly people can become a political whore never ceases to amaze me.

Titans is an admitted Hillary supporter -- so what do you expect. Of course he is having a fit, if Republicans nominate the one candidate who can defeat Hillary.

"But the pretend-conservative act is being carried onto a whole new playing field, one that has become wildly influential over the past few years and one that does not stand to be instantly recognized as a fake. That playing field is the blogosphere, which is then used in conjunction with massive e-mailings to “spread the word” (as one e-mailer insisted I do to my readers/e-mail list) to other conservatives.

The concept is the same: the blog or e-mail claims, first, that the said writer has been a conservative for years and that they have “had it with Republicans.” They then point to an issue that conservatives would likely be upset about such as excessive spending, immigration, or the expansion of government. Their supposed rage over the issue has convinced them to either not show up to vote in 2006, or, in order to really show Republicans, vote for the Democrat instead. "

Nobody is perfect. Heck, Reagan gave amnesty to 3 million illegal immigrants, let the deficit greatly increase, raised taxes in his 2nd term. Those weren't conservative things either. No President or candidate is perfect. I don't believe Rudy will push for gun control nor do I believe it will pass Congress. Again, lets just agree to disagree. You can be classy and do that right? If not, anyways, I'm on the east coast, I've got to go to bed. Good night.

I asked them once what would they do, if Duncan Hunter dropped out and endorsed Giuliani.

I think these people are NOT pro-Hunter or pro-Thompson, they are just using them as excuses. Their main "core conviction" is to be ANTI-Rudy, no matter what, even if it means President Hillary with a Dem Congress and resulting activist liberal judges, handing all three branches of the government to the Democrats.

Did you know that Fred Thompson supported McCain against Bush?

Yes I do, you've posted it many times and looking back with 20/20 hindsight I think I would rather of had McCain as President instead of Bush who lead us to defeat in the last election cycle.

Very true. And Giuliani really hasn't been talking about the issues much at all.

I'm still not wholly sure what to think of his candidacy, and McCain's makes no sense whatsoever. Romney is talking about the issues and seems to be doing so well. I just don't get the early endorsements with Rudy's relative silence.

"Congressman Vitter has chosen political power over principle, and I suppose enjoys the heady thrill of being courted by a Presidential candidate."

I agree and his office is getting a call from me in the morning.

"So, senator Vitter's endorsement means nothing to you."

A politicians endorsement only means something if your a non- thinking robot that can be influenced by a politicians position. You should learn to think for yourself. Politicians are supposed to do what we want, not what they want. Were supposed to be the boss, remember.

"Why aren't we considering the logical choice - Jeb Bush?

Jeb Bush, after the government-sanctioned death of Terri Schiavo by starvation and dehydration, has the lowest chance of the current declared candidates.

Jeb Bush did everything possible to save Terri.

It's really amazing that people blame the one person who did try to do everything -- why aren't you blaming the longlist of other people who really are to blame.

"Thompson is a Ross Perot play, inside the Republican primary.

Thompson is no Perot and he's not a puppet. Also, unlike Giuliani, Thompson is not a gun grabber. Giuliani, being a proven gun grabber, has no support outside the country club.
