Iran on Monday strongly condemned the US film company Warner Bros. over the allegedly "anti-Iranian" blockbuster film 300.
Javad Shamqadri, art advisor to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, told Fars news agency that the film was an insult to Persian culture and in line with the American "psychological war" against Iran.
Zack Snyder's film, based on a comic book by Frank Miller, tells the story of the battle of Thermopylae in Greek history in which 300 Spartan warriors led by King Leonidas heroically fought a massive Persian army attack, delaying an invasion by King Xerxes' forces and giving Greeks time for a counterattack.
Iran's has called foul over what it calls "deviation of history" but also because the Persians in the film were shown as "ugly and violent creatures rather than human beings."
The news network Khabar organised a special programme in which the film was evaluated from several angles by film critics who argued that the film's alleged efforts to expose Persians as violent was a US political plot implemented through Hollywood and the Warner Bros. company.
The state-run network also linked the film to ongoing political differences between Washington and Tehran such as the nuclear dispute.
The film critics further said that after Germans, Japanese, Russians and Arabs, Iranians seem to become the new "villian" in Hollywood productions.
A large number of Iranians abroad have already started a worldwide email campaign to send protest missives to Warner Bros. for having insulted Persian culture and history.
The film reportedly made 70 million dollars over its opening weekend, making it the first official blockbuster of the year.

I saw it Saturday. Noticed a lot of military guys in the audience (Military women are harder to spot when in civvies).
So the Iranians are miffed. So what? Cinematic hyperbole notwithstanding, the historical fact is: 300 Spartans held off tens of thousands of Persians for three days at Thermopylae.
Let Iran make their own movie.. I liked the one I saw
Except for the severed heads and other body parts flying through the air.
I thought it was rather violent, but the values, (Democratic society faces up to totalitarian hoarde, "Spartans never surrender. Spartans never retreat.") and that the violence is an integral part of the story, made it acceptable to me. My wife and I enjoyed it very much; will probably buy it on DVD when it comes out.
I always knew you were kinky archy.
What makes you think Frank Miller is a die hard leftist loon? I just heard an interview he did on NPR. He caused the Che-loving leftist interviewer to sputter for words.

Imagine facing 300 people like him....
I suppose we will see the California Highway Patrol guarding Warner Bros. again!
Yeah baby. They might be able to cobble together some basement tape beheading but when it comes to putting on a show, well, this one's gonna leave a mark. Jihadi productions up against hollywood is a bit of a mismatch, lol. When it comes to stopping the advance of modern culture, it's kind of like trying to push back a tidal wave armed with a spoon.
This is the seminal story of free men united and motivated by a love of freedom. They prevail mainly because of the ability to innovate without fear of causing someone to lose face. They prevail because they are free thinkers. Remember the eugenics aspect was reserved only for the warriors, the front line defense against enemies. I would want the ultimate intellectual warrior doing that job too.
It's a beautiful film. You should hope your kids grow up thinking of the body and sex the way this film depicts it. It's like watching museum figures come to life. I took my 14 year old son. Best message I could give the kid about honor, brotherhood and how to and how not to treat a lady.
Effeminate, "Metro-sexual" Hollywood shot themselves in the foot again with this one, right after Gladiator.

Saw it this evening. Good story, told many times before in various settings. I'm always up for another. Special effects, both digital and makeup, very impressive. I hadn't before pictured Xerxes as being over 7'.
"Hey, if they really want to piss off the Iranians, they should make a sequal to 300 on the battle of Salamis where the Persians were routed by the rest of the Spartans and ran like little girls back to Persia"
Spartans were relatively minor players at Salamis.
Hey Javad, what about the insult to me for the 9 bucks and 3 hours of time I wasted on that crappy movie!!!
One thing, in those days, a massive army would have been 20K - 50K men, and not a million. The logistics for doing anything with a million-man army in those days did not exist.
Hollywood should do a movie on the Battle of Lepanto. Then the howls from the Mohammedan world would be deafening!!
That would be a great movie!
Strange, one of the grievances against the Shah was that he tried to connect his kingdom with the ancient (and non-Muslim) Persian realm. In the Shah's time, there was a rather bizarre ceremony on the site of Persepolis celebrating a supposed anniversary of the Persian kingdom. This is rather as though the PLO were to celebrate the revolt of Judah Maccabee.
