Halliburton's Dubai Move Sparks Outcry Members Of Congress Criticize Move As Insult To U.S. Soldiers And Taxpayers

(CBS News) DUBAI, United Arab Emirates U.S. oil services firm Halliburton Co. is shifting its corporate headquarters and chief executive from Houston to Dubai in a move that immediately sparked criticism from U.S. members of Congress.

Halliburton Chief Executive Dave Lesar, speaking at an energy conference in nearby Bahrain, said he will relocate to Dubai from Texas to oversee Halliburton's intensified focus on business in the Mideast and energy-hungry Asia, home to some of the world's most important oil and gas markets.

"Halliburton is opening its corporate headquarters in Dubai while maintaining a corporate office in Houston," spokeswoman Cathy Mann said. "The chairman, president and CEO will office from and be based in Dubai to run the company from the UAE."

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., called the decision to move as "an example of corporate greed at its worst."

"This is an insult to the U.S. soldiers and taxpayers who paid the tab for their no-bid contracts and endured their overcharges for all these years," Leahy said in a statement.

"At the same time they'll be avoiding U.S. taxes, I'm sure they won't stop insisting on taking their profits in cold hard U.S. cash," Leahy said.

Rep. Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, is already planning a hearing on Halliburton's move, Time Magazine reports online.

"Halliburton is opening its corporate headquarters in Dubai while maintaining a corporate office in Houston," spokeswoman Cathy Mann said. "The chairman, president and CEO will office from and be based in Dubai to run the company from the UAE."

So they will be closer to where the work is located and they are maintaining their Houston offices. They are also retaining their U.S. registration. THis is just a practical move to better facilitate what they do as a company, not a tax dodge. But Haliburton is like holy water to liberals.

Why should Halliburton execs remain in Houston and rack up insane travel bills every quarter, if most of them will be in the Emirates anyway?

I don't blame him, he's was probably afraid the dim's were going to make Halliburton illegal and then prosecute him.

Also to me. I heard Rush talking about this. Seems most of their business is now in Asia and thereabouts so they moved the headquarters to Dubai to be closer. They still pay US taxes and are chartered in the US. Not much oil well business in the US any more.

The only possible motivation for all of the ridiculousness that comes from Sen. Patrick Leahy is advanced syphilis.

Waxman, you Putz!!

Halliburton is an energy company in the oil business that your kind hates!

You've made it your life-goal to make the United States dependent on oil-imports while reducing domestic drilling as much as possible.

Halliburton is simply going to where most of their work-load is!

Your faux-outrage makes me laugh!

I'm sure the U.S. government won't stop insisting on taking my tax payments in hard U.S. cash either.

The Dems caused this by creating an anti-business climate in Washington. This is just the first of many such executive outsourcings, I predict, that will happen on the Dems' watch.

I predict many more will follow to escape the bad press and politicians. I think ExxonMobil will be soon. Walmart may move to China!

So Halliburton's largest stockholder is the Democrat Party's largest contributor.

Also I recently read that Halliburten is selling off their Military support division. Curious as to that move until this. Now it makes sense as the Democrat(ic), Euro-Socialist, Enviro-powered Anti Americans would use that as a tool to attempt to create hysteria over Halliburton moving to Dubai. Not that they won't make hay of it anyway.
