And this NAZI-style smearing is often done via the Party, albeit by indirect means, and the criticism that this is racist, fascist thinking is also apparently not broadly countenanced.

To be fair, calling your opponents traitors to the race and to the state predates Communism, Fascism, and just about every ideology out there. Westerners can see everyone's side of the argument. Chinese can only see the Chinese side. This isn't so much an artifact of Communism as it is an artifact of the ethnocentrism that pervades all of the non-Western world. This is why non-Westerners put Western imperialism in a category of its own, as singularly destructive, when in fact Western imperialism is probably the shortest-lived and least destructive of the imperialisms they have gone through in their history.
