Bush announces Latin America aid (Hang onto your wallets)

Mr Bush said "terrible want" still exists in Latin America

US President George W Bush has unveiled a social aid programme to alleviate the plight of the region's poor, two days before a tour of Latin America.

Millions of dollars will be spent on education, housing and health care.

In a speech, Mr Bush described poverty in the region as "a scandal" that had caused some people to question the value of democracy.

The Bush administration has been criticised by opposition Democrats for neglecting Latin America.

Correspondents say Washington is adjusting to the election of increasing numbers of left-wing administrations in Latin America, including some that are openly critical of the US.

'Terrible want'

Speaking at the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Mr Bush vowed to boost aid to Latin America, saying "helping our neighbours build a better and productive life" was a US priority.

In an age of growing prosperity and abundance [the terrible want] is a scandal and it is a challenge

US President George W Bush

The region has "made great strides toward freedom and prosperity but despite the advances tens of millions in our hemisphere remain stuck in poverty," he said.

Despite the progress Mr Bush said "terrible want" still existed, adding that nearly one in four people in the region live on less than $2 a day.

"Many children never finish grade school, many mothers never see a doctor. In an age of growing prosperity and abundance, it's a scandal and it's a challenge," he said.

The president said the US initiatives include an additional $75m for Latin Americans to learn English in their countries or in the United States, $385m dollars for housing, and funding for medical assistance via military teams.

Mr Bush will start his trip in Brazil on Thursday. His week-long tour will also take in Uruguay, Colombia, Guatemala and Mexico.

Your screen name says a lot about your view on this issue.

Like it or not it really does.

Kinda like Gonzales targeting the southern Border Agents.

Ohh your an observant one, my screen name is my favorite baseball player's number genius...

I think Ramos and Campeon should be granted pardons or clemency at least.

But that doesn't cahnge the fact that if we do nothing, then we will be dealing with quasi communists for quite a long time, how long do you think Chavez will run Venezuela?

Are we just going to wake up tommorrow and stop using crude oil?

We get much of our oil from Mexico, another Chavez in power there is not a good thing for me at least, but the again I tend to look ahead...

no, it isn't my problem....
all these people want is America's wealth....
and that isn't my problem, it is their problem
Must we pay 'protection money' for protection or do
we behave as Americans and do what Americans do?
Could we Americans take care of America? I believe we can!
We are Americans and nothing is impossible!
oh, btw, Americans can do the possible today,
Get back to we Americans on the impossible tomorrow!

I've been to Albuquerque some 30+ years ago and it was heavily Hispanic then. I can only imagine now.

Thank you for that vote of confidence, but no thanks on the running part. More can be done on the outside than on the inside at this particular moment in history, or at least that is my humble opinion.

Who said anyhting about criminals? That would be you.

Castro only infected one other country in the region with communism, and that didn't last long.

Those were different times, we could mine the harbor in Managua back then, now Chavez is flush with our oil money and he is throwing it around hoping to infect other countries with Communism Lite, and it's working because we have done nothing to counter his money and ideology.

What's up with this guy? He gets maligned in South America and turns around and tries to buy their goodwill with money. He resembles the politician who still claims that Islam is a ROP. I feel dirty for having voted for him.

No reason for you to feel dirty! He did it to all of us. I'm angry at him, but I'll be darned if I will feel dirty about it. This is the result of having to vote for the lesser of two evils. What we got is still evil. That is why I won't vote for another RINO!!

We had 48% Hispanic already in NM but now, only God knows how many there are. I do know that when Bush and the traitors in Congress pass amnesty, it will throw our elections to the Democrats until the end of time.

Please don't misunderstand. I have no problem with legal Hispanics. In fact, most of my Hispanic friends are bitterly opposed to giving them another amnesty. It's destroying things for them too. Most of them are 3rd and 4th generation Hispanics and they have long since assimilated into our culture. Many of them can't even speak Spanish, and it's making them mad that after all these years, they're going to have to learn it. LOL!

Exactly! You hit the nail on the head! Unfortunately, we're going to see a lot more of him kissing up to the RATS for the rest of his term, which btw, can't end soon enough for me.

Spending has been wild the last few years and i'm not happy to see Bush spending even more money for handouts overseas. Spending has been one of the most disappointing things about his presidency and the last few years of Republican rule. We showed that we are almost as talented at spending as are the libs.

Normally I don't care for foreign aid at all. But the Chinese have been very active when it comes to buying influence in South/Central America in an attempt to isolate us; the canal was merely one example.

This may have more to do with that.
