the above that you wrote is what my husband always brings up when I mention Fred Thompson. He was so disgusted that Fred could not handle Glenn. Does anyone else worry about this and does anyone have an idea of why Fred let it happen?
John Glenn was THE HERO of my childhood. I first knew of him as THE ASTRONAUT, but then I learned about his heroism as a Marine aviator in Korea as I got older. For me he was the epitome of what a Marine hero was.

I think that is what Fred was feeling at the time. He couldn't bring himself to destroy this icon of his own youth. And I think it's what led him to leave the Senate.
I think you are exactly right. You could feel the disgust Fred felt over the whole sorry affair and Glenn's part in it.
