If you want a good analysis on the situation in Iran, I recommend Ed Luttwak's, "Three reasons not to bomb Iran - yet"

The worst thing we could do now is to make a premptive, overt attack against Iran. The Iranian regime is intentionally trying to create an external threat to deflect the widespread domestic opposition to the regime. Ahmadinejad's outrageous statements also help raise the price of oil, which helps the flagging Iranian economy.

It is truly a super long yet great read. What I don't understand however,and maybe you can help me with it, is how do you resolve the last paragraph in the link that states the following:

....Iran, under it's present rulers, cannot be allowed finally to acquire nuclear weapons--for these would not guarantee stability by mutual deterrent but would instead threaten us with uncontrollable perils.

I don't really understand the mechanism for stopping them getting nukes.
