I Understand you don't want to negotiate with terrorists, who does, but if I know GW and condi(and i don't i am guessing) it will be negotiation from a point of strenggh.
In the past the Iranians have used negotiations to spin their side and stall for time. They still are.
If I had to guess, now we are using the negotiations to increase pressure with sanctions and stall for time. The longer they are denied any goods longer they will suffer and maybe regime change who knows. I would have to be naive to think that we are not supporting some sort of regime change within the country as well. Has to be going on at full speed.

Umm wait a minute. The consensus earlier on the threat was "don't bomb Iran yet." Now I read this other thread and it is "Don't talk to them"
IF we are not to bomb them and not to talk to them, what are we suppose to do?

You use jelly not jam, and you smash with the flat of your hand. Don't be gross. I just tried it, and it tastes better when you smash with your shoe.

Actually when you consider all the options available, which are few, GW's strategy is probably a stroke of genius...uh let's see where have we said that before....oh yeah right here on a regular basis.

I don't believe a man and his family should be left twisting in the wind from a witch hunt simply because the MSM gets their kicks from it.
You're where I am on this.... but. I understand the consequences, political and otherwise, of President Bush pardoning Libby now, but we all know it's the right thing to do. However there's more than one "right thing," particularly at this level of responsibility. I know that the President knows that it's not right to leave Libby hanging out there. But he is constrained by the other responsibilities that he has. It comes down to the cost, not to him, but to other things that both he and Libby have taken oaths to put before their own interests.
There is a quote I go back to often from a movie with Ben Kingsley (The Confession). His character has killed the doctor who killed his young son by operating on him while drunk. He's turned himself in and refuses to take a plea deal, preferring to get the truth out about flaws not only in his victim's but more importantly in the system that allowed them to do what they did and then go without punishment. It's a complex and ultimately flawed film, but it tackles the questions of dealing with competing "right things" as well as the inevitable corrupt self interest that also must be dealt with. The moral quandry of the movie is summed up in this line:
"People often think that it is hard to do the right thing. It is not hard to do the right thing; it is hard to know what the right thing is. Once you know what is right, then it is hard to not do the right thing.
I think the right thing to do is pardon Libby now and not only live with the consequences but use the firestorm as a launching place for a counterattack against those enemies, foreign and domestic, who are waging war against decent people trying to do their jobs. I also know that the President has just a bit more information about what the real costs of that will be to other things that are ultimately far more important, in the grand scheme of things. I, for one, still trust George W. Bush and will defer to his judgment, even if I do still feel free to express my opinions, flawed though I admit they may be.
As importantly, based on what Libby has said and done (or not said and not done) I think that is his position, as well.

I would have to be naive to think that we are not supporting some sort of regime change within the country as well. Has to be going on at full speed. There is a clandestine war going on, with bombings and assassinations of Iranian military brass and scientists, top brass defections to the West, etc. The policy is a combination of clandestine activities, financial sanctions, "negotiations" backed up by pressure from Saudi Arabia (who can affect the Iranian economy by increasing oil production), etc.

This could be "the" post of the thread!
Very well said. Truth is there is no down side to standing up to the rats at this point since they demagogue ,lie, cheat and spin everything we do anyway! Why not stand up against tyranny which is what Fitzputz gave us and call a spade a spade.

BTW, did I ever show you the sharpener I was searching for that's typically sold in bait and tackle shops? I just love it .. and my old one finally wore out after about 8 years. It really does a super job on knives and scissor blades. Found mine on eBay, and I got a couple more for Christmas gifts.

You know the myth about the will o' the wisp? It's an evil spirit that leads you farther and farther into the swamp. Our military is good stuff. But sometimes, I wonder about our politicians, our media and our public consensus. The media and its allies surely act like the will o' the wisp, leading folks further and further into that point where they will fall into the marshwater and drown.
And then will they be like drowning sailors, standing on the shoulders of the sailors below them in a desperate struggle to reach the surface, pushing the less fortunate they lead into the wet further down with ever less chance to reach air?
