NY Times: Democrats Steer the War in Iraq in Fits and Starts
New York Times ^ | March 10, 2007 | ROBIN TONER

WASHINGTON, March 9 — Over the next few weeks, the new Democratic Congressional majority will try to translate public discontent with the war in Iraq into actual policy, with a series of votes on the withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq — the party’s most consequential votes yet.

Doug Mills/The New York Times

A TV camera viewfinder caught Representative Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, right, who, with Senator Charles E. Schumer, spoke to reporters about the war in Iraq.

But the Democrats face some extraordinary political and institutional hurdles, which explain why Congress wades so reluctantly — and at times so achingly incrementally — into matters of war, veteran lawmakers say.

In the House, the Democratic majority stretches from nervous centrists and conservatives, reluctant to encroach on the prerogative of the commander in chief, to an antiwar contingent that wants to force the president to begin an immediate withdrawal. Democratic strategists say they hope and believe they have found a legislative formula for an Iraq spending bill that can hold that sprawling majority, with a timetable for withdrawal of American combat troops in 2008.

But it has been a close call.

Some on the left are anguished, believing that years of struggle against the war should now pay off, without further delay. “This is a true vote of conscience for me,” said Representative Lynn Woolsey, a California Democrat who voted against the Iraq war resolution in 2002 and against every spending bill for the war since. She plans to do so again.

"The Dems approach to ending the war is to assume pulling the troops out is the desired end. "

Bush should threaten to do just that, reminding the nation that the bloodbath to follow will be Dem blood. Also pointing out that we will inevitably have to reinvade in order to oust the Iranians who take over.

Democrats caused thousands of killings in Vietnam and two million in Cambodia the last time they cut funding for national defense in wartime.

Pelosi, Murtha, Emmanuel, Reid, Schumer et al are nothing more nor less than traitors in their extant conspiracy to sabotage the national security and give aid and comfort to the enemy.

That the president hews to his new tone rather than jail the lot is symptomatic of the anemic results of the current noble effort.

Never send a JAG where a bomb will do; never send a stern reply to a press query where the FBI armed with arrest warrants will produce superior results.

Article II Section II names the president as commander-in-chief, not chairman of the committee of the Depends-dents.

On to Tehran--post-Easter regime change in Meinkampfistan.

They (democrap directed Congress) may be incapable of playing commander in chief but they're on the same page with the Iranian 'diplomat' meeting today in the Iraq talks ... 'we need a withdrawal timetable' ... and the democraps say their treachery doesn't effect the war effort or the troops or the M.E. direction into radical Islam's embrace. DUH!

This is the start of a long march for the victorious Democrats against the evil warlord in the oval office. In the mean time, Democrats must be like fish and swim among the people and even the bourgeoisie, thinning their own ranks on occasion to maintain revolutionary fervor. But compromises and considerable bloodshed are necessary sacrifices towards the ultimate goal.

Thank you Dr Mao.

I agree "threaten". Just not do it. I'd love it if he pushed their buttons.
