Using the taxpayers own money to bribe them so you can stay in power is much more than a fiscal issue, it is an issue of corruption. It is not merely about spending, but the proper role of the federal government. I see the role of government to be THE defining issue of conservatism. Great civilizations are far more likely to collapse from within than be destroyed by an external enemy. Just before Rome fell, its political leadership was bribing the people with handouts so they would look the other way as the power of the central government expanded while the liberty of the Roman Republic withered away. Sound familiar?
