Giuliani leads GOP pack, doing it his way

He's pulled far ahead of the man long presumed to be the party's front-runner for the 2008 presidential nomination — Sen. John McCain of Arizona — and undercut other hopefuls, most prominently Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts.

In survey after survey of Republicans, Giuliani is leaving his rivals in the dust with double-digit leads. And in key swing states, pollsters have found he would beat the Democratic front-runner, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York. Even some leading social conservatives are putting aside their differences over abortion and gay rights to join Team Giuliani.

The Giuliani surge may be a sign that social issues will not be the litmus tests they long have been for GOP presidential candidates.

Still, some social conservatives are making peace with him. After his speech to the Hoover Institution, a questioner noted that conservative columnist Maggie Gallagher, who had voted against him as mayor because of his abortion stance, recently wrote that she would support him for president because of concern about national security.

As the campaign intensifies, voters will get to meet the pre-9/11 Giuliani — a brash politician who stepped on toes all over New York; a mercurial personality who humiliated his second wife in public.

He's pretty used to it - I think he'll manage better than most would. I've lived in the NYC area my whole life. The media constantly shredded him and he managed to win reelection.

Right now he's going to hope to continue to lead while passing on debates. Rudy isn't going to be at the NH debate next month. Of course it's going to be hard for Rudy to explain many considerable issues in which he differs with the conservative philosophy. All Rudy's support seems to stem from 'he can win' when it is FAR from a sure thing. The only thing looking 'sure' about it is the destruction of the GOP and the loss of the all-important states that will be needed for the GOP nominee. Rudy CAN'T WIN.

Losing credibility??? I think GWB already did that for social conservatives... government under his watch has expanded just about as fast and large as FDR. don't kid yourself GWB is a socialist.. tax cuts are great, but come on, the increases to medicaid is unacceptable... if the GOP was serious about smaller government, that should have never happened, if anything it should have been reformed with major cuts.


Giuliani has the visibility you need to defeat another candidate who has as much visibility as Hillary.. We are talking about the American public here ... alot of the voters are the same american people that rather vote for an American Idol then vote for a leader... these same americans saw on tv Rudy's leadership during 9/11... no GOP candidate will stick out in the minds of independents more then him.. stop kidding yourself, just because someone is anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage doesn't mean the other 70% of voters are going to be on board to a no name... remember the hardcore GOP base is only 30% of the public.. you are going to need an extra 20% to even make the election close.... either you go along with the libertarians and independents with their thoughts of a GOP or we will see Hiltery in the white house.

As a Duncan Hunter supporter I am choosing not to engage in debate on this Rudy Giuliani thread on Free Republic. As a freeper I am disappointed that there are fans of a liberal presidential candidate trying to push socially liberal views on this socially conservative forum. In particular, I have noticed that the Rudy Giuliani fans do not answer posts questioning the qualitative substance of their candidate, or the posts are met merely with insults.
