If so, it was a brilliant ploy but I kind of think it was just a run of the mill DUer. I've been there enough to know that they are all certifiable nuts.

C'mon, you're being disingenuous. Yes, there are conspiracy theorists on DU, but there are on FR too, and they're far from the majority at either discussion board. If you actually read the DU thread linked to you'll see it pretty much all people mocking the guy for being ridiculous.
Misrepresenting people you don't agree with is a crummy tactic coming from either side.
