To achieve our objectives, America needs the strong reform I've proposed that will:

-Vastly improve our border surveillance and enforcement capabilities;

-Increase the manpower, infrastructure and capabilities necessary to block, apprehend, detain and return those who try to enter the country illegally;

-Strengthen the laws and penalties against those who hire illegal aliens and violate immigration law;

-Achieve and maintain the integrity of official documents to stop fraud, verify immigration status and employment, and enforce immigration law;

-Encourage immigrants to come out of the shadows so we know who is in this country and develop a sensible guest worker program that will serve the nation's best economic and security interests.

John McCain on current border policy:

“The truth is that our nation's porous borders and failed immigration policies are a national disgrace

Washington has failed miserably in this vital responsibility”

John McCain on a new policy:

“We must devote the resources necessary to do the job right, and our efforts must be sustained. Imagine what we could achieve if we spent less money on pork barrel schemes such as "bridges to nowhere" and more on enforcing our immigration laws and other homeland security imperatives.

“Legitimate status must be earned by paying stiff fines and back taxes, undergoing criminal and security checks, passing English and civics tests, remaining employed for six years before going to the back of the line to achieve legal permanent residence status, and adhering to other strict requirements.”

The truth is that, on immigration, and just about everything else, John McCain is failing the American people.

"Many of our own ancestors came for the very same reason"

Many more of most of our ancestors within the last 200 years were born on US soil and died on US soil. This notion that US is made of immigrants is false. Traditionally immigrants have made up less than 5% of the US population, most Americans would have to acknowledge that 95% of all their relatives who lived and worked in the US were native born.

Estimates are as high today as 30 million immigrants in the US, out of 300 million, that’s 10%, and McCain, is implying here that we need to respect levels of immigration that are twice as high as normal, and that we need to take in more , greater percent than any time in US history because some people have a few percent of their ancestors who immigrated ?

Huh... with that logic, we might as well make it mandatory that every child under 18 run away and join the circus, since many have few percent of our ancestors who could juggle, or their grandmothers grew beards.

McCaniac working with that lurch Kennedy made me want to puke.

I just do not trust the man and doubt he will make it past the February primaries.

Where was McCain when Republicans needed his support so now were are Republicans when he needs our support, no where.

I simply don't trust McCain.

I trust Obama to present himself as to who he is and what he stands for.

I don't trust McCain.

"AMONG THE federal government's most important obligations is to secure America's borders and enforce sensible immigration laws that will keep our nation strong and safe. For far too long, Washington has failed miserably in this vital responsibility."

That's a hell of a thing to say, considering that he's in Washington and has been part of the Federal government for the past 24 years.

That just tells me that he failed right along with everyone else.

The truth is that our nation's porous borders and failed immigration policies are a national disgrace, adversely affecting both our economic prospects and national security.

Make them all citizens with the stroke of a pen, problem solved.

Someone needs to tell little Johnny, doing the same thing over, and over, and expecting different results is insanity. I've tried, he refused to listen.

McCain's getting out anyway, as soon as his best political friend, Fred Thompson (co-author of McCain-Feingold-THOMPSON, and prime mover of McCain-Feingold) gets in. They're two peas in a pod, and they've obviously realized that McCain is dead meat.

Regardless of how one interprets - and that is the right word - McCain on the usual buzz-words/subjects on this site, there is another consideration:

McCain flew 23 combat missions in Vietnam as a Navy aviator. His aircraft was shot down on 29 July 1967 on his 23rd mission while bombing a power plant in Hanoi.

Ejection from the A-4E Skyhawk broke both his arms and a leg.

Parachuting, he plunged into a lake near the target. A mob dragged him from the lake, broke his shoulder with a rifle butt. He was repeatedly bayoneted.

McCain spent five and a half years in the notorious "Hanoi Hilton" where he was repeatedly beaten and tortured. Three and a half years of this was in solitary confinement.

He refused an early release from that prison. He was finally released, along with other American POW's in March 1973, two months after the Vietnam war ended.

McCain is the recipient of a Silver Star, Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

All this ALONE entitles McCain to a hell of a lot of respect.

If some of the keyboard warriors on this site cannot understand this, then the failing is in them - not McCain.

Thank you for posting. It just gave me the incentive to call McCain's office and tell them to stick his Amnesty, (no matter what he calls it) where the sun don't shine. I am not subject to 'spin'.

I will never vote for this man in a million years and it satisfies me to no end to tell them so.
