Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson is facing increased calls to get into the 2008 GOP nomination race.
Sources told FOX News that Thompson, 62, now one of the stars of the popular NBC prime time series "Law & Order," has not ruled out a presidential bid, and has authorized advisers and supporters to continue to gauge support.
Advisers are holding regular strategy sessions, investigating fundraising avenues and private polling to measure enthusiasm. Perhaps pre-eminent among a number of prominent Thompson backers working behind the scenes is former Senate Majority Leader Howard Baker.
Baker has been a mentor to Thompson since before the Senate's Watergate hearings, for which Baker hired Thompson as majority counsel and for which Thompson earned fame for having Baker ask the key question that led to President Richard Nixon's downfall: "What did the president know and when did he know it?"
Baker ran for president himself in 1980. Thompson eyed the White House in the 1990s.
While Thompson, who also helped raise money and advise I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's legal defense fund, continues to mull a bid, sources said he has been inundated with calls from GOP donors and supporters urging him to run.
Thompson has a solid and consistently conservative voting record that his supporters said makes a stark contrast to Republican frontrunners Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Mitt Romney.
This week, he told radio news host Mark Levin that he would have something to say about his plans, but not yet.

Thank you; I have already posted that one, too.
(Thompson) is best known for his 1997 investigation into and public hearings about campaign funding irregularities in the 1996 presidential election.
He has supported a balanced budget and actively pushed for term limits. (Hence the push for Finance Reform)
He has served as a member of the Senate committees of Judiciary, Government Affairs, Foreign Relations, and on the Special Committee on Aging.
In 1997 he was appointed chair of the Government Affairs committee. He also has chaired the Subcommittees on Youth Violence and on International Economic Policy, Export and Trade Promotion.
A resident of Nashville, Thompson has developed an interesting career that balances success in his chosen profession (law) with state and national success in politics and entertainment.

You just have to wait until your belt is right under your armpits, and you have a combover. No problem. :)
No problem.
zarf's a troll. He has no agenda other than that.
I agree 100 percent; and he's stood by Libby in all of this, another plus in my book. He even showed up in court a few times.
He had a zero rating from NARAL in Dec. 2003. I do not know if he had a position on embryonic stem cell research.
LOL!
Oh, MAN!! You are making me drool. I LOVE J.C.!!
Thompson/Watts would be a juggernaut.
Actually, dated July 6, 2000, as it was about Thompson being VP for Bush.
He said he was pro-choice according to the articles in 1994. He voted pro-life. He could have had a real change of heart, or it could be that he hadn't really thought it through before he had to vote on issues.
Huh? I'd never favor anyone from the clergy to run for office.
Reagan was only married twice. He did not file for divorce and was against it.
I agree with you on what a great president he was, though.
He wouldn't have been there to vote on that; but that doesn't mean anything to some people.
Bush was against stem cell research, but that didn't stop Alan Keyes from calling him evil.
Did you not read the part where his office called National Review and said he was pro-life?
Well, I was thinking Giuliani-ites and social conservatives.
Whatever. I just think any compromising I would have to do to vote for Fred will not affect my core values, and I have seen many social conservatives who seem to feel the same way.
The current FR poll is telling.
What's telling is who is here trashing Thompson, IMO.
Fred and Chachi?
He does morning talk in DC. The show's a lot of fun and of course Grandy's self-depricating humor is the funniest of all.
Check him out on wmal.com between 6 and 9 am.
Hey, I knew Grandy was a vegan, but didn't realize that he was fluent in Arabic (per wikipedia). Also, note that he appeared on an episode of "Law & Order" in '03
Let us play a game. Whom will EV be suporting for president, after the nominees are chosen, if anyone? LOL.
