CBS Fires Katie Couric's Top Producer

NEW YORK -- CBS News on Thursday fired the executive producer of Katie Couric's struggling "CBS Evening News" broadcast and appointed former CNN and MSNBC president Rick Kaplan to the job.

Kaplan replaces Rome Hartman, who had position since before Couric began at CBS last September, said Sean McManus, CBS News president.

The newscast has been a distant third in the ratings behind ABC and NBC. During last month's pivotal ratings "sweeps" period, Couric's average of 7.6 million viewers was 6 percent down from what Bob Schieffer recorded in February 2006.

More troubling to many who watched it was the newscast's apparent confusion in direction, driving viewers away from an anchor given a multi-million dollar commitment to jump from NBC's "Today" show.

CBS' shift comes less than a week after NBC News announced that the executive producer of "Nightly News," John Reiss, was leaving. Longtime ratings leader NBC and anchor Brian Williams have been sliding in the ratings as ABC's "World News" with Charles Gibson has won for three of the past four weeks.

No, Couric won't go, Kaplan will just put obnoxious guests on her show with her until she get the idea of how to be nasty and snide to Republicans. It's what he did to Joe Scarborough until he got into line on the left. Now Joe is in competition with Chrissy Matthews as a Democrat attack dog.

At a reported $15M/year for 5 years, I'm not going to cry for her.

I was thinking the same thing - I kind of like Bob Schieffer, too. At the risk of showing my lack of knowledge, is he a known leftist? Because if he is I couldn't tell it when I watched his broadcasts.

Well....he is a Democrat, but I believe him to be fair. He is someone I would love to go out to eat with. I just enjoy him.

He is a gentleman, and presents the news or does his interviews well, without chiding or making a fool out of his guests with a "gotcha". I am sick of "gotcha t.v. like Hannity.

I no longer watch or listen to "them". (and that means Mr. O'R too).

Hey, CBS! It's the perky bimbo you idiot, not the producer.

They really ought to fire everyone at CBS News, shut it down, and run Lassie or Leave It To Beaver. It is preferable not to pretend to inform, than it is to misinform a badly as CBS does.
