Can they? Unless it's stated in the contract I don't think they can legally refuse currency because it happens to be in small denominations, the first time that is.

If they send out a notice after that then thats a different story.

I think there is some kind of ruling that pennies are not legal tender.

My Electric bill, and most of my other bills for that matter, request check or money order and explicitly state Do Not Send Cash.

Yes, they can. Bills are "legal tender" and must be accepted in any denomination (if you accept cash at all), but coins, while they have value, are not "legal tender".

I believe you can refuse coin, but not currency.

Some years ago, a guy tried to pay a lawyer in pennies and the lawyer sued the guy. In appeals, a Federal District Court ruled that the pennies were not Legal Tender.

I don't know if they can refuse his payment, but they sure can cut off his electricity.

$560 buck a month for electricity? What is he some kinda environmentalist or a Democrat or something?
