SPCA officer totals car; saves turtle

An officer with the Louisiana SPCA narrowly escaped serious injury after she slammed on the brakes and flipped the special vehicle she was riding inside of in order to avoid running over a turtle that was in the middle of the road in Algiers Wednesday.
LASPCA Executive Director Laura Maloney said that officer Sali Magee was driving a special $60,000 animal transport vehicle on River Road in Algiers during the early morning hours when she noticed a turtle in the middle of the road. Maloney said Magee sharply hit the breaks and rolled the car into a ditch, totaling the vehicle. The turtle was unscathed.
Maloney said Magee was wearing a seatbelt and that the airbag did not deploy during the accident. There were no animals in the vehicle at the time.
"When you look at the pictures of the vehicle following the accident, it's amazing that she wasn't seriously injured," said Maloney. "We're grateful that Sali is okay. We never want our staff to put themselves in harm's way; Sali's concern about the turtle highlights the compassion routinely shown by our officers."

The vehicle was likely insured.This looks like a state organization. Likely taxpayer funded and self-insured. (Many states self-insure. I do not know about Louisiana.)
