There is another reason for the compensation of the Sept 11 families.

It was, in part, a settlement, underwritten by the government to preempt an endless series of multimillion dollar lawsuits from bankrupting the airline industry.

While some may see this as "corporate welfare", given the circumstances of the time, the industry was in serious danger of collapsing.

I'd suspect such lawsuits would have named the federal government as well. Obviously, some of the september 11th victims had the assets to afford high priced lawyers, which is another factor in the choice of payout.

Is it?

I thought the compensation for the Sept 11 families was primarily from donations from all of us.

The amount was so large because there was such everyone donated.
