A Catholic newspaper is telling readers that Catholics shouldn't support White House hopeful Rudy Giuliani because of his support for allowing women access to abortions.
The National Catholic Register's editorial urges anti-abortion voters to choose another candidate other than Giuliani.
"A Republican party led by a pro-abortion politician would become a pro-abortion party," according to the editorial that appears on the Web site and is set to appear next week in the newspaper's print edition.
Editors say "they hope that pro-lifers will 'be reasonable,' not let the perfect be the enemy of the good, and go along quietly," but "we won't."
"When they ask us to 'be reasonable' and go along with a pro-abortion leader, they assume that there is something unreasonable about the pro-life position to start with," the editors wrote. "We’re sorry, but we don’t see what is so unreasonable about the right to life.
"What looks supremely unreasonable to us is that we should trust a leader who not doesn’t only reject the right to life but even supports partial-birth abortion, which is more infanticide than abortion," according to the editorial.

"Would a pro-abortion president give us a pro-life Supreme Court justice? Maybe he would in his first term. But we’ve seen in the Democratic Party how quickly and completely contempt for the right to life corrupts. Even if a President Giuliani did the right thing for a short time, it’s likely the party that accepted him would do the wrong thing for a long time," the editorial reads.

Nonsense.
And Rudy isn't "pro-abortion." He has gone on record as saying: "I hate abortion." Not, "I personally oppose it," but "I hate it." To me, that means something.
This isn't a "non-profit church publication". It's associated with a Catholic religious order, the Legionaries of Christ, but is its own corporation for legal purposes.
They can say whatever they please. We still have freedom of the press in this country, at least for the moment.
You mean, he hates abortion so much he's gone on record as saying he'd pay for his daughter to have one?
And the readers of that publication have the right to make up their own minds to vote for...
No kidding, really?
Fortunately, the readers of that particular publication tend to be solid Catholics who understand that a pro-abortion, pro-homosexual candidate is not an option, whether he has an "R" by his name or not.
Churches per se are allowed to address issues and legislation which impinge upon moral principles, but are not supposed to endorse candidates or parties. Except Black churches, of course, 'cause they're so special...

If the candidate in question meets the qualifications described here: [Catholic Answers' Voters Guide for Serious Catholics] then he or she is fine.
There are very few Democrats running for national office who meet those qualifications.
I guess we now have yet another splinter group born on FR: true Catholics in line with true conservatives.
The Church doesn't come out against candidates. This orthodox Catholic newspaper would never endorse Ted Kennedy. That's a given.

Thank you for sending that to me... if it comes down to Rudy vs Hillary I will have no problem casting my vote for him. In fact, I have no problem now casting it in the primaries either. I will stop there, being a Catholic I dont want to get into what the church does and doesnt do regarding moral issues.
They are acting as State representatives (the Vatican being its own country and all that). Are you Catholic, by any chance?

Seems like it doesn't really matter much. There are very big name pro-abortion Catholic Democrats who regularly get reelected with Catholic votes and who still go to mass openly and receive communion without fear of reprisal from the church.
