A Catholic newspaper is telling readers that Catholics shouldn't support White House hopeful Rudy Giuliani because of his support for allowing women access to abortions.
The National Catholic Register's editorial urges anti-abortion voters to choose another candidate other than Giuliani.
"A Republican party led by a pro-abortion politician would become a pro-abortion party," according to the editorial that appears on the Web site and is set to appear next week in the newspaper's print edition.
Editors say "they hope that pro-lifers will 'be reasonable,' not let the perfect be the enemy of the good, and go along quietly," but "we won't."
"When they ask us to 'be reasonable' and go along with a pro-abortion leader, they assume that there is something unreasonable about the pro-life position to start with," the editors wrote. "Were sorry, but we dont see what is so unreasonable about the right to life.
"What looks supremely unreasonable to us is that we should trust a leader who not doesnt only reject the right to life but even supports partial-birth abortion, which is more infanticide than abortion," according to the editorial.
[snip]
"Would a pro-abortion president give us a pro-life Supreme Court justice? Maybe he would in his first term. But weve seen in the Democratic Party how quickly and completely contempt for the right to life corrupts. Even if a President Giuliani did the right thing for a short time, its likely the party that accepted him would do the wrong thing for a long time," the editorial reads.

What is Hillary Clinton doing running in the Republican primary?
But, this isn't the "Roman Catholic Church" speaking; it's a Catholic newspaper. The Church doesn't support or oppose candidates...but she must always oppose the evil of abortion, as well as the many other evils being promoted these days.
Well the priest I wanted to ask, being our pastor... recently ran off to Arizonia with one of our female parishonors.
You are so right, it's his opinion that I should be seeking as his morals are without question. Oh did I mention the female is also married??
Fred Thompson is an interesting figure. We must keep in mind that it's still almost a YEAR before there's any primary or caucus.
Best wishes to your mother - I miss her interesting commentary.

Yes. Otherwise, how do we define ourselves as Catholics?
Kennedy isn't running for President.
I have to get a subscription.
This can't be repeated often enough.
Politicians who cannot support the right to life over the right to choose death of another individual have not used their God-given reasoning ability. They are not, as far as I am concerned, eligible to hold political office, especially not that of President of the United States.
Not fit for any political office. Amen.

Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do and how you do it.
Rudy Giuliani
We don't have to accept liberal Rudy. There are other options. This fellow may be the best one:

Im pro-choice. Im pro-gay rights, Giuliani said. He was then asked whether he supports a ban on what critics call partial-birth abortions. No, I have not supported that, and I dont see my position on that changing, he responded. RUDY GIULIANI (R), FORMER MAYOR OF NEW YORK CITY: I'm pro- choice. I'm pro-gay rights.KING: Giuliani supports a woman's right to an abortion, and back in 1999, he opposed a federal ban on late-term abortions.
GIULIANI: No, I have not supported that, and I don't see my position on that changing.
KING: Immigration could be another presidential landmine. Back in 1996, Mayor Giuliani went to federal court to challenge new federal laws requiring the city to inform the federal government about illegal immigrants.
JEFFREY: He took the side of illegal immigrants in New York City against the Republican Congress.
KING: Giuliani opposes same-sex marriage but as mayor, he supported civil unions and extending health and other benefits to gay couples. He also supported the assault weapons ban and other gun control measures opposed by the National Rifle Association.
GIULIANI: I'm in favor of gun control. I'm pro-choice.
Republican Big-Wigs Support Pro-Abortion Event in NY
Pro-abortion Governor George Pataki and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who also supports unrestricted abortion, are co-chairs of the 2000 Choice Award Presentation to be held on May 30 at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City. The event is sponsored by the Republican Pro-Choice Coalition, a group that is campaigning for the removal of the pro-life plank from the Republican National Platform.

From Human Events:
Rudy's Strong Pro-Abortion Stance
As these comments from a 1989 conversation with Phil Donahue show, Rudy Giuliani is staunchly in favor of abortion:
"I've said that I'll uphold a woman's right of choice, that I will fund abortion so that a poor woman is not deprived of a right that others can exercise, and that I would oppose going back to a day in which abortions were illegal.
I do that in spite of my own personal reservations. I have a daughter now; if a close relative or a daughter were pregnant, I would give my personal advice, my religious and moral views ...
Donahue: Which would be to continue the pregnancy.
Giuliani: Which would be that I would help her with taking care of the baby. But if the ultimate choice of the woman - my daughter or any other woman - would be that in this particular circumstance [if she had] to have an abortion, I'd support that. I'd give my daughter the money for it."
Worse yet, Giuliani even supports partial birth abortion:
"I'm pro-choice. I'm pro-gay rights,Giuliani said. He was then asked whether he supports a ban on what critics call partial-birth abortions. "No, I have not supported that, and I don't see my position on that changing," he responded." -- CNN.com, "Inside Politics" Dec 2, 1999
It's bad enough that Rudy is so adamantly pro-abortion, but consider what that could mean when it comes time to select Supreme Court Justices. Does the description of Giuliani that you've just read make you think he's going to select an originalist like Clarence Thomas, who would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade -- or does it make you think he would prefer justices like Sandra Day O'Connor and Anthony Kennedy who'd leave Roe v. Wade in place?
Rudy's abortion stance is bad news for conservatives who are pro-life or who are concerned about getting originalist judges on the Supreme Court.
An Anti-Second Amendment Candidate
In the last couple of election cycles, 2nd Amendment issues have moved to the back burner mainly because even Democratic candidates have learned that being tagged with the "gun grabber" label is political poison.
Unfortunately, Rudy Giuliani is a proponent of gun control who supported the Brady Bill and the Assault Weapon Ban.
Do Republicans really want to abandon their strong 2nd Amendment stance by selecting a pro-gun control nominee?
Color me happily surprised!
Try Melissa Hart/Michael Steele. That would blow the field away.
The Church hasn't announced that Rudy is excommunicated, either -- that sort of thing -- a public, official recognition & announcement -- is very rare. However, they have been more and more outspoken in recent years regarding pro-abortion (etc) politicians who incur excommunication because of their stubborn and persistent support for legal abortion.
Agreed!!!
You may be chocked to find out (as I was!) that you can work for the parish offices (and I would assume the same for the diocese) and not be Catholic.
If you want strong Catholic political opinions, I think you need to look to the Wanderer for that.
chocked = shocked.
Well, I live in Dubuque, Iowa where 90%+ of the population is Catholic. This lady, Joyce Connors, also graduated from a local Catholic College.
And get this, she works for the archdiocese of Dubuque as Director of the Office for Protection of Children. So really, regardless of her religion, what the heck was the Bishop doing hiring some pro-abortion woman for this type of a position? And there she is in the local paper painting a sign for pro-abortion Hillary Clinton.
The Catholic Church has extremely weak leadership in the United States. I have gotten most of my education from Catholic institutions, and for the most part, they are riddled with socialists wearing habits and white collars.
