Comic superhero Captain America is assassinated
New York Daily News ^ | March 7 2007 | Ethan Sacks

Captain America is dead.

The Marvel Entertainment superhero, created in 1941 as a patriotic adversary for the Nazis, is killed off in Captain America #25, which hits the stands Wednesday.

As Captain America emerges from a courthouse building, he is struck by a sniper's bullet in the shoulder and then hit again in the stomach, blood seeping out of his star-spangled costume.

His death is sure to ignite controversy in the comic book world - still reeling from Superman's death in 1993 and resurrection the following year - and even political pundits, who may see Captain America's demise as an allegory for the United States.

"It's a hell of a time for him to go. We really need him now," said co-creator Joe Simon, 93, after being informed of his brainchild's death.

Simon and artist Jack Kirby came up with the character in 1941 as an adversary for Adolf Hitler. Since then, the patriotic hero has appeared in an estimated 210 million copies sold in 75 countries.

About super heroes getting killed a lot.

Jean Grey ("Wonder Girl/Phoenix") pretty well takes the cake.

Then again there was the death of one of the Robins in "Death in the Family" where the gimick was the fans decided and the fans wanted the new wimpy version of Robin dead and to stay dead.

Its probably for the best. For the past thirty years, Marvel (founded by major Clinton fundraiser Stan Lee) has moved Cap further and further to the left and Cap spent more time fighting the US government (at least when a Republican was in office) than defending it. They might as well have started calling him "Captain U.N."

This is Stan Lee your talking about. I think the assassin will look like Hillary.

Stan is a major Clinton fundraiser. If anything, Hillary will be at the funeral vowing to save Cap's legacy

In the most recent and short lived Captain America/Falcon series, Cap is shot in the head and pronounced dead, but revives due to the serum.

Well, there is always Ultimate Cap who is clearly to the Right.

The fact that a comic character dying is breaking news on Fox shows just how sad we have become.

If it stops them from talking about Anna Nichole Smith, even for a moment...

Why does the Earth take 24 hours to rotate? Because that's how long it takes Chuck Norris to jog around the equator.

Captain America's been torn apart
He's a court jester for a broken heart
Turn me around, take me back to the start
I must be losing my mind, are you blind?
I've seen it all a million times

Put his a$$ in suspended animation (no pun intended) then run him through the Weapon X program - add adamantium skeleton and all!

Well, Cap and Wolverine were friends in WW2, after all. But I don't know if we could get the Canadian government to foot the bill for an American superhero.

"Why not a SUV?"

Because it would be too easy to tie Fat Algore or John F*king Kerry to the murder.

"In some ways I'm sure he's kind of relieved. 66 years is a long time to spend as an 0-3. I mean, promotions may be slow in the superhero line of work, but he should have at least made Lieutenant Colonel by now."

Wow! I see now that move up or move out has gotten a lot more brutal since 1995.

My money's on Bun Bun.

Bun Bun already did it, after Santa was turned into a homicidal alien monster, IIRC.
