I'm positively amazed at all the serious American conservative voices who are throwing right-wing flamethrower Ann Coulter under the bus for her schoolyard joke about political correctness and the word "faggot."
The snorts of disapproval and huffs and puffs are pouring in. "I was not amused." "She hurts the conservative movement." "We should never name-call." "She was a distraction from the serious straw poll that featured strong showings by Romney and Guiliani." And on and on...
Why are so many conservatives afraid to fight back?
Time and time again, we're called a variety of names by liberal Democrats. We wag our finger at them and warn them to stop calling us Nazis and liars and warmongers and the like.
So when one of our own gets under the skin of wimpy liberals, we burn her at the stake?
I hope everyone who wants to bash Ann Coulter had a chance to see her on "Hannity and Colmes" last night. As the videotape proved, her entire speech to the CPAC crowd included a series of zingers and punchlines and potshots at the other side. And as she said on the show, her joke was intended to be a commentary about the idiocy of sending a Hollywood actor into rehab because he used a bad word. Besides, unless John Edwards was preparing to announce that he's coming out of the closet, the happily married man with children should have no real worries about being called something he's not. She intended it to be the schoolyard taunt of "wuss", something said all the time.
Well, I'm not going to cave with the rest of the weenie liberals and pompous conservatives who like to eat their own. I think Ann Coulter is gutsy and terrific. Besides, she's a commentator, not a U.S. Senator.
Sorry Mike, but Coulter did get it right. A definition of 'faggot' is 'an effeminate man'. Is the Breck girl, as Rush calls him, an effeminate man or not?
I don't want Ann Coulter thrown under the bus, but I do wish she'd fight the good fight without resorting to "school yard taunts". She doesn't help our cause by resorting to childish comments like we've all come to expect from Liberals.
Wouldn't work, as there's no joke there, since no one ever got sent to rehab for calling someone a wussie or a girly-man.
Once again, here's the original Coulter quote:
I was going to say something about John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word faggot.
The person who went into rehab was television actor Isaiah Washington of the series "Grey's Anatomy," after he called his homosexual co-star T.R. Knight a faggot. So, Coulter was complaining about the consequences of using the word "faggot" to describe an actual homosexual, not just an effeminate man.
John Edwards has been married for 30 years. He and his wife have had four kids, one of whom was killed in a car accident.
I agree with you and your wife 100%,go Ann go.
I got a lot of flack for it, but I also was for sending the boy back to his father (no matter where he lived).
FaggotGate is about conservatives too scared to speak out for morality and what is right. Ann drew a line in the sand, and said, Either you're pro-faggot or anti-faggot. The columnists are scurrying around to cover their butts. (Sorry.) How can they be silent? They can't, because if they are, they leave open the question whether they support her remarks.
So they have to denounce or support her.
Notice that many conservatives are hiding behind the "the joke was not that funny" excuse. This is another attempt to cover their asses. The joke was funny. And the media attention it has caused is sensational.
My favorite denunciation is from a liberal writer who said, "Everyone should stop mentioning Coulter in their columns." Except he was too stupid to realize he just published a column about Coulter, in exact opposition to his demand. What a dumbass.
Ann knows what she is doing. Don't second guess her. She is brilliant. She is keeping the debate open on how America is supposed to talk about and feel about homosexuality. She is getting the debate back on the table in her own way.
Now, the rest of us can use these water cooler opportunities to denounce homosexuality. Even if we have to denounce it respectfully.
"I'm positively amazed at all the serious American conservative voices who are throwing right-wing flamethrower Ann Coulter under the bus for her schoolyard joke about political correctness and the word "faggot."
He shouldn't be.
Too many Republicans are craven cowards who throw their own to the wolves at the slightest excuse - Gingrich, DeLay, Lott. They maintain the idiocy that we should be held to a higher standrad in the insult depart than our opponents.
Kennedy gets smashed, kills a woman driving drunk, pleads with relatives and friends to lie for him and the Dems put him on the Senate Ethics Committee.
Ann is great, she is biting, and she is right on target - and she doesn't need any apologies.
Edwards DOES look like a prissy little sodomite.
Isaiah Washington holds the award for outstanding actor in a drama series for his work on Greys Anatomy at the 38th NAACP Image Awards, Friday, March 2, 2007, in Los Angeles.
Isnt irony ironic?
And hypocrisy disgusting?
"The person who went into rehab was television actor Isaiah Washington of the series "Grey's Anatomy," after he called his homosexual co-star T.R. Knight a faggot. So, Coulter was complaining about the consequences of using the word "faggot" to describe an actual homosexual, not just an effeminate man."
LOL
You need a course in logic. (Or several.)
The fact that Mr. Knight is a homosexual does not rule out the possibility that he may also be effeminate.
And it does not rule out that Mr. Washington may have been remarking on his effeminate ways.
Or are you a mind-reader?
Sheesh what people will resort to to wax self-righteous over a joke.
The truth of which has been proved now a hundred thousand times over here.
Bravo! to Mike Gallagher.
"Wouldn't work, as there's no joke there, since no one ever got sent to rehab for calling someone a wussie or a girly-man."
Soon, though, soon.
How does that Martin Niemöller quote go again?
First they came for the people who made jokes about going to rehab for using the word faggot and I did nothing. Next they came for
"
"Why are so many conservatives afraid to fight back? "
Because they are friggin' wooses! Especially some of the men! totally embarrassing!!!!!!!
Agree 100%
He probably is effeminate, but that is not the point. The PC outrage to Isaiah Washington's comment was generated specifically because he called a genuine homosexual a faggot. Had Washington called an effeminate heterosexual a faggot, there would have been much less response. Ann made reference to Washington's specific case.
Had Ann wanted to object to the PC outrage associated with calling an effeminate heterosexual a faggot, the Washington case does not work as an example. And of course Ann had to know that Knight was actually gay, it was very public information by the time Ann referenced it. Events had overtaken your argument that Washington might have meant "effeminate."
Sheesh what people will resort to to wax self-righteous over a joke.
I agree that is tiresome to have to parse Ann's words for the umpteenth time, but it is just as tiresome to hear posters contend for the umpteenth time that that Ann did not say what she so obviously said.
Now, because of her dumb comment and her failure to retract it, she will find herself uninvited to many conservative events and unwelcome on many conservative media outlets. Her influence will certainly diminish. She may actually find herself more popular with the left, since to them she has become a valuable circus act -- the conservative they love to hate. She has apparently revived Edwards's flagging campaign, and put him back in the running for the vice-presidency. Does pointing out that Ann's joke will have bad consequences make me self-righteous? Fine.
We needed her on the front lines. She was magnificent at forcefully telling the adult truth about politically incorrect subjects. She could win a battle of wits and facts with almost any liberal. She just took herself off the battlefield with one botched joke. It's a real loss.
BTW the Free Republic spell checker flags "faggot" as misspelled. Someone really should fix that. The word seems to be a favorite of many Freepers.
" He probably is effeminate, but that is not the point. The PC outrage to Isaiah Washington's comment was generated specifically because he called a genuine homosexual a faggot. Had Washington called an effeminate heterosexual a faggot, there would have been much less response."
You know this how?
Divine revelation?
What a joke.
(And it was a joke. An excellent joke. The point of which you are yourself proving.)
"If Ann used a different word, the whole point would have been lost."
Apparently the point was lost anyway. Either people can't read or they can't understand what they've read. I thought her joke was a brilliant application of wit in front of an audience of half-wits.
