Giuliani top pick at Dorchester Convention Republicans select former New York mayor as choice for president at annual Seaside conference
SEASIDE (AP) - Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's presidential bid looks like it's picking up steam in Oregon.
Giuliani easily won a straw poll Sunday taken among delegates to the Dorchester Convention, an annual gathering of influential Oregon Republicans.
He picked up 60 votes from attendees, nearly twice that of his closest competitor, former Georgia Rep. Newt Gingrich, who finished with 35 votes.
Among the other marquee candidates, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who has received endorsements from Oregon GOP party chair Vance Day and former gubernatorial candidate Kevin Mannix, pulled in 23 votes.
Arizona Sen. John McCain brought up the rear with 19 votes, though he has won the endorsement of Oregon's most prominent Republican, U.S. Sen. Gordon Smith.
"There's a recognition that we need to do something different to win," said Troy Nichols, a Republican consultant.
"And Giuliani, if you look at his record in New York, he's done more on Republican ideas and principles than any other candidate."
Giuliani's relatively liberal leanings on social issues are likely to play well in Oregon and the West, delegates said, where many Republicans have a strong libertarian streak and shy away from government regulation of individual behavior.
Gingrich has not entered the race, but has support from some members of the Republican base who are dissatisfied with the existing field.
"People think Republicans need to return to their roots, and Gingrich is a strong fiscal conservative," said Portland pollster Mike Riley.
The Dorchester straw poll, while a small sampling, can be telling.
In 2006, Portland lawyer Ron Saxton won the gubernatorial straw poll in a field of three candidates; he went on to win the party's nomination.
Other candidates to place in the poll included former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with eight votes and Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo with 10 votes.
As I understand, Dorchester is rather a RINO crowd.
Impressive, Newt a strong 2nd though.
Hallelujah!
"Impressive, Newt a strong 2nd though.
I'd rather say a very weak 2nd as, between the two, Rudy got 77% more votes than Gingrich.
77% more votes than the rival means a very weak rival.

This is oregon though.
Oh, no -- the "only true conservatives" crowd will be here in a minute to set you straight.
People who believe in a conservative use of federal power are not "true conservatives", you see.
The term 'conservative' is in the middle of being hijacked by the Social's.
I know -- our Dorchester is the complete opposite of yours.
"where many Republicans have a strong libertarian streak and shy away from government regulation of individual behavior."
Which is why the voted for the biggest gun grabber in the field.
As polls, primaries play out, I continually to say, that a two G ticket might play very well for the Big Tent GOP as well as some Blue State. The GOP might actually win in '08. Gee , what a novel idea!
As a Duncan Hunter supporter I am choosing not to engage in debate on this Rudy Giuliani thread on Free Republic. As a freeper I am disappointed that there are fans of a liberal presidential candidate trying to push socially liberal views on this socially conservative forum. In particular, I have noticed that the Rudy G fans do not answer posts questioning the qualitative substance of their candidate, or the posts are met merely with insults.
