Giuliani Estranged From His Children

Some Say Personal Problems May Hurt Prospects

CBS News

NEW YORK (March 5) -- It doesn't look like Rudy Giuliani's two children will have a role in his presidential campaign. According to press reports, the GOP frontrunner's third marriage has alienated his son, Andrew, 21, and daughter, Caroline, 18, from their father.

Giuliani's 21-year-old son, Andrew, told the New York Times that he would be too busy working on his golf game to participate in his father's presidential campaign.

"There's obviously a little problem that exists between me and his wife," the younger Giuliani told the newspaper. "And we're trying to figure that out. But as of right now it's not working as well as we would like."

Giuliani's marriage to his third wife, Judith Nathan, followed his divorce from Donna Hanover, the mother of Andrew and Caroline.

In 2000, Giuliani announced during a live TV interview that he planned to divorce Hanover. She responded by publicly accusing Giuliani of adultery.

Caroline Giuliani has not spoken publicly, but the Times and New York's tabloid newspapers reported that she was also alienated from her father as a result of his marriage to Nathan.

The New York Daily News reported that Giuliani rarely spends time with his children and that he had failed to attend many important events in their lives, including Andrew's golf tournaments and Caroline's school plays.

Andrew Giuliani is a sophomore at Duke and a member of the school's golf team. Caroline attends a private Catholic school in Manhattan. She will attend Harvard University in the fall. Giuliani has had no comment on his relationship with his children.

Giuliani holds a huge lead in the polls over GOP presidential rival John McCain, but some political analysts believe the former New York Mayor's estrangement from his children and other personal problems is bound to inflict political damage.

Political analyst Charles Cook told Newsday that the latest twist would hurt Giuliani with the GOP's conservative voters.

"This is just going to be one of a thousand cuts," Cook told the newspaper. "This will just sort of fit into a whole constellation of issues that work against someone winning a conservative party's nomination, a party that thinks of itself as a pro-family party. This just makes it really hard."

Reagan was also for abortion before he was against it.

Do these people have short memories, or what?

In this day and age, blended families with estrangement is more the norm than the exception. This will probably be reflected in our future leaders too.

I'm not sure being a great dad makes someone a great president. Reagan was was our greatest and he was not too good at the dad business. Michael Reagan did not campaign for him, either. I can't remember caring about that. His daughters were so stupid they only make Reagan look great in comparison. The dancer? He really mattered, too. What a dork.

Giuliani is a leader. I would vote for him against Hillary any day. I would rather see a true conservative nominated. I am glum about that prospect.

CBS and the rest of the Rudyphobes will drag his kid's personal daddy problem by a chain from the back of a pickup if they have to.

Even drag it through FR. That's just the kind of people they are.

We should always hold up Reagan to compare our leaders to until someone better than Reagan comes along and then we compare them to that.

Don't tell me what 'we' should do. I don't do that.

We can certainly do better than the crop we have

If you are talking about posters, I agree.

we can certainly do much better than electing a mayor as President.

I'll ignore the 'we' and continue - if you have a problem with 'a mayor' being president - guess what, don't vote for him - but more importantly - don't trash him.

I don't have the energy to scan every post on this thread but why would anyone on this forum reflexively believe the MSM line on Rudy's personal life? It's as trustworthy as anything they typically put forth as the truth.

The reality is Rudy was, early on in his mayoral term, stuck in a loveless marriage and his wife clung to him, the marriage, and the spotlight it brought upon her. She used it to catupult her career and Rudy acted as honorably as one possibly could given the circumstances. Many of us who live and lived in NY during the time are well aware of this reality and we're also aware of his capabilities.

Simply put, other than possibly Ronald Reagan, no elected leader has ever had a more direct positive impact upon the quality of my life than Rudy Giuliani. He's as real as real gets.

Given my druthers, sure I'd prefer the White House were occupied by a man whose conservative principles were more alligned with mine on a number of issues. Rick Santorum, however, got smoked. George Allen proved himself an inept candidate. And Jeff Sessions ain't running.

Take issue with Rudy on whatever legitimate policy issue you will, but this personal stuff is bunk. It's being propagated by liberals who fear him and conservatives who don't know him.

Perhaps, they could smear Reagan or remind us that by holding to our principles we are nothing more than Democrat dupes.

No it wasn't Ronnie's fault his kid turned out to be a gay liberal ballet dancing daddy-hater.

And as for reminding you about principles, I would remind you of the axiom that there comes a time for every man when he must decide to rise above principle and do the right thing.

You're so right. Millions of Americans will be separated from their children if we get a president who is weak in the War on Terror; or a Commie like Hillary who collaborates with the enemy. Nuclear attacks on our cities will destroy families quicker than abortion or divorce.

What are these people thinking? What are their priorites?

Sometimes those 2nd or 3rd wives can be hell. I know. My father's 2nd wife(my mother passed away)was hell on wheels.

This article is a lot of nonsense, not a serious issue. His son doesn't get along with the stepmother. Wow, now that's an unusual situation. Not.

The son also said his father would make a terrific president.

And we have better choices than Guilanni

This man is crap. And any so-called Republican who supports him is utterly wrong.

Guess that means you won't be attending the inauguration, right?

Actually it was ronnie's adopted son that is the most embarassing.

I'll vote for Rudy the day hell freezes over.

Well, at least you admit your vindictive attitude stems from a personal problem. I suspect most of the other Rudyphobes have similar emotional reactions governing their judgment, but you're the only one so far with the integrity to own up to it.
