It is amazing that Saudi women haven't pulled a collective "Thelma and Louise" by now, i.e., when the odds are stacked so badly against them, go out in a blaze of glory, but take any number of cretinous, backward Saudi men out first. How can they endure this awful, unjust treatment year after year, with no end in sight?

a relationship outside wedlock, which is illegal in the ultra-conservative desert kingdom.

But only for the woman, of course.

G’ said one of the judges told she was lucky not to have been given jail time.

Yet, in almost all the polls I've seen of Muslim women in the Middle East they say they want Sharia. Guess they enjoy the whip.

You have to understand that public info is controlled in the Middle East and people live in total fear. Phones are on mass bugged and the governments all have people agents everywhere. If someone calls you and asks you what you think of Sharia or the Saudi king, you don't really know if this call is being listened to or if it is a government agent pretending to be a pollster. If the government is listening you and your family may be killed for giving the wrong answer.

A Saudi woman who was kidnapped at knifepoint, gang-raped and then beaten by her brother has been sentenced to 90 lashes -- for a meeting a man who was not a relative...

This is awful. People who are gang-raped should be exempt from all laws the others in society must live by....

</sarcasm>

But muslims always tell me that their strict laws concerning women show that they love them more than the west loves their women.

She was sentenced not as a rape victim but for meeting a man with whom she was having an illegal affair with.

Incidentally that man was attempting to black mail her.

The rape has nothing to do with her conviction. NOTHING.

Her brother did not rape her, he beat her for the shame brought upon the family.

The story says nothing at all about punishments handed out to other participants.

Let's consider the facts rather than "journalistic" sensationalism or spouting bigoted one off comments.

Ah, one of the more "modern" nations of the ME. This case seems to make clear the idea that that part of the world is FUBAR.

I'm starting to get the impression convinced that this culture is incompatible with liberty, rationality, and peace. They crave a life of submission and servitude to unquestionable rulers (who claim to represent a higher authority...lol), and seem relegated to using the opportunity provided by even the faintest forms of democracy to support only the most dictatorial. And it isn't just while they are under the watch of the local Taliban-ish rulers...even in Canada and other western countries they are calling for Sharia law; they seem to hunger for oppression. It is truly bizarre, and represents a challenge for assimilation, let alone bulk reinvention.

Though the 'experiment' may "work", I'm doubtful that the results will be desirable in any sense. The problem will not have been the sculptor, it will have been the putty itself.

So you agree with her sentence? What are you saying?

So what, it's still utterly barbaric. Any society that treats half its members like cattle - and not particularly valuable cattle at that - will never progress past the stone ages.

Do you think 90 lashes is an appropriate sentence for a woman meeting an unrelated man? What's his punishment?

OK. So the facts are:
she was being blackmailed.
She was beaten by her brother.
She was raped 14 times
She is going to be whipped 90 times

and I'm not to hold bigoted views of Saudis?

What school of thought control do you represent?
