Recognition is the key here.
The North American P 51 Mustang began as a breakthru airframe design,
it had potential...but was lacking in a few area's
most surrounded its Allison engine which lacked power at higher altitudes.....limited its performance.
Britian having recieved the early version Mustangs went with Rolls-Royce engineers in putting the Supermarine Spitfires Merlin 61 engine into the Mustang .

The Spitfire and Hurricane won the Battle of Britian,...but they did not have the working range that the P 51 Mustang did.
Other GOP Candidates have excellent skills and would be good choices
but they do not have the range....as you point out,..and that others here see clearly.
