I've long suspected something like what you suggest, well before now. There are many attracted to Republican fiscal policies, who know that third parties don't win, and who despise what are popularly labeled "religious conservatives."
If Rudy does indeed win without the support of evangelical Christians, it could spell the early stages of real persecution of people of (theistic, Biblical) faith in this nation. Then we'll have to ask, to what end are we winning this WOT for which we've elected Rudy?
