G.O.P. Candidates Criticize Slur by Conservative Author [Ann Coulter]
The New York Times ^ | 3/4/07 | ADAM NAGOURNEY

Posted on 03/04/2007 1:18:25 AM PST by XR7

WASHINGTON, March 3 — Three of the leading Republican presidential candidates on Saturday denounced one of their party’s best-known conservative commentators for using an antigay epithet when discussing a Democratic presidential contender at a gathering of conservatives here.

The remarks by Ann Coulter, an author who regularly speaks at conservative events, were sharply denounced by the candidates, Senator John McCain of Arizona, Rudolph W. Giuliani of New York and Mitt Romney of Massachusetts. Their statements came after Democrats, gay rights groups and bloggers raised a storm of protest over the remarks.

Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference before an overflow crowd on Friday, Ms. Coulter said, “I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I — so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards.”

Mr. Edwards’s aides responded with an e-mail message that attacked Ms. Coulter and urged supporters to donate to Mr. Edwards’s campaign. “John was singled out for a personal attack because the Republican establishment knows he poses the greatest threat to their power,” said his campaign manager, David E. Bonior. “Since they have nothing real to use against him, Coulter’s resorting to the classic right-wing strategy of riling up hate to smear a progressive champion.”

Ms. Coulter, asked for a reaction to the Republican criticism, said in an e-mail message: “C’mon, it was a joke. I would never insult gays by suggesting that they are like John Edwards. That would be mean.”

Republicans should have no part of this campaign against Ann.

Alas, the MSM has a great deal of influence over many Republicans, and many FReepers.

Toss in the idea that Candidate A "must be endorsing Ann's comments because he spoke in front of the same group that allowed Ann to get on stage and call someone a "faggot".

I don't want rain all over you little fantasy, but Ann didn't "call Edwards a faggot".

YOU did, because you wanted it to be true.

Agreed. To my astonishment.

If a Democrat use a slur, the other Democrats lock ranks around him... 'Pubbies throw their own to the wolves. Makes me wonder why they're worth voting for.

Oh, I don't know. Maybe because some of them are decent, serious, trustworthy adults who recognize that it's a very dangerous world out there & that stooping down to the other side's gutter level is hypocritical & utterly self-defeating to the cause of advancing conservatism?

Evidently some conservatives would rather be flaming knee-jerking hypocrites, tarnish the conservative message with their shrill, childish namecalling & lose elections just so they can poke fun at "homos", "wetbacks" & "ragheads" like a pack of crass, adolescent hyenas.

[.. If Ann were a man, wouldn't Edwards have every right to knock his teeth down his throat for that comment? Would any of you guys stand for someone calling you that publically? Of course not, you'd kick their ass! ..]

What are you smoking?.. You're tripping...

Democrats get in some trouble when a de facto spokesman does a gaffe - something pretty offensive. Remember Whoopi Goldberg in 2004? Republicans get in a lot more trouble, for tired frustrating media bias reasons.

But that's not to say what Ann said was not inappropriate. The word "faggot" can be used for humor in a completely absurd context. But otherwise, it stings a lot, and should not be used in my opinion. "Faggot" = a log of firewood. The word implies the life of a homosexual is discardable. Ann didn't mean it that way; nonetheless it was a poor decision to use the word in my opinion. I liked her comeback, though -- she wouldn't want to demean faggots by comparing them to Edwards!

That's where we part company then, I see nothing wrong with it. If nothing else, she showed the leftist and rinos for what they are, dirty, stinking double standard hypocrites. I don't hear leftist and rinos screaming for the head of Bill Maher(spel?) and he's spouting BS about being sad that Cheney wasn't assassinated? Where's the 10 thousand threads condemning that? Where's the 10 thousand newspaper articles calling for his destruction?

PC is gonna kill this country. The thought police are lining up.

Go Ann!

I'm more annoyed that Coulter felt the need to make this joke at an event that was important to all conservatives, thereby making it seem like CPAC endorsed what she said. Had she said it in a column or TV appearance, it wouldn't have done this. Its like calling someone a faggot at my sister's wedding.

So who did she offend, faggots? I could care less if they
are offended. I believe she made her point by intimating that if you use the wrong word today, faggot, as an example, people in this country think you need to seek mental health treatment. That's just how bad pc has become. And the uproar over her saying it, definitely has proven her point.

"a know - Ann didn't call anyone a fagot. She said something to effect to the effect of "I'd like to talk about Edwards, but using the word fagot means you have to into rehab...""

Um, ok. So why would she not want to talk about Edwards because she cant use the word "faggot"? Why cant she no longer talk about him because she cant use that word?

Sign me up for the "hyenas." I'm tired of cowards who woulld rather run than face up to the people that use (successfully) terms like "racism" or "homophobia" as their blunt instruments. They Democrats are not going to stop, and if you don't take the battle to them and fight them with their own weapons, you'll lose.

"I do not want a Republican candidate who will pander to the PERVERTS... "

So not calling someone a faggot means they are pandering to perverts?

So Reagan pandered to perverts? For some reason I dont recall him calling anyone a faggot.

Coulter is supporting Romney as of now.

She said of the top tier candidates, i.e., those most likely to be nominated, she preferred Romney. She went on to say that she liked Tancredo and Hunter better, but as of now, they are not among the top candidates.

Am I to assume that the view of some here is that Ann is free to "express" herself without response while these candidates are not?

Ann must be a very powerful person. Imagine, three men running for the Rep nomination for President feel compelled to acknowledge and denounce the remarks of a private citizen who is not a GOP or government official. Do they do the same thing when Bill Maher, Michael Moore, Al Franken, et. al. say something derrogatory about Bush or other Reps?

"if you don't take the battle to them and fight them with their own weapons, you'll lose."

And we'll beat them by... lobbing thoroughly witless third-grade level insults at them from a stage? Right. What did I miss here? When did the party of Ronald Reagan become the party of Don Rickles?

How many of you go around in your daily lives and call people this?
I do. If the shoe loafer fits, wear it.
Do you tell an idiot they're an idiot or do you tell them they're a genius, the equivalent of blowing smoke up their posterior, and then laugh wholeheartedly at them behind their back when the next person shows them to be the idiot they actually are?

So if Obama comes out tomorrow and says that Condi Rice is a Bulldyke Houseni**er, you would expect that she just chuckle about it & forget it.

I would hope that she would pop off with "Oh yeah, well your Momma is so white she couldn't be rescued in a snowstorm."

So much for the concept of 'playing the dozens' these days.
