Only $1 billion of the $77 billion the city is seeking from the Army Corps of Engineers is for infrastructure damages it says it suffered because of levee breaches during Hurricane Katrina. The rest is for such things as the city's tarnished image and tourist industry losses.
The city "looked at everything and just kind of piled it on," Mayor Ray Nagin said. "We got some advice from some attorneys to be aggressive with the number, and we'll see what happens," he said. New Orleans has joined big business and thousands of homeowners in filing claims seeking compensation from the corps for damages sustained when the levees broke during the 2005 storm, flooding 80 percent of the city.
The claims allege poor design and negligence by the corps led to the failure of flood walls and levees.

That entire cesspool of a city should be bulldozed under and returned to wetlands. I will never waste my time in that city ever again.
The Democrats have discovered that people can get rich by suing themselves.
Gimme, Gimme, Gimme.
Disgusting.
I don't live far from there....been a million times...i will never spend another dime in the chocolate city....haven't been back since Katrina.
If the courts hear this case, then every single person who has ever been mugged, assaulted, or attacked by criminals in New Orleans should get in line to sue the city.
Ray Nagin remains the idiot he proved himself to be back before Katrina blew in. NO can rot, as far as I'm concerned. Of course, it was rotting before Katrina blew in. Then there were the termites and the civic corruption.
"The claims allege poor design and negligence by the corps led to the failure of flood walls and levees."
Where do these people think the corps of engineers gets their money? The Corps requests money and politicians either approve or deny. I have seen with my own eyes the New Orleans district ask for money for such updates and repairs and be turned down due to environmental and political concerns.
Yeah and Nagin should be named in the suit as well!
...or overcharged for a hurricane at Pat O'Brien's. (No pun intended with the drink name.)
Screw Nagin
The Bush Administration will settle this case Out of Court for no less than 100 Billion.
You may want to bone up on your geography.
I thought I remember hearing money was allocated to fix levees, but state and/or local officials spent it elsewhere. Am I mistaken?
You should also include those preyed upon by criminals exported by New Orleans when pickings were too slim there.
$77 BILLION?? You gotta be kidding me. That figure is larger than California's budget.
In light of the pending litigation, the Corps Of Engineers needs to pull out and suspend all activities in the area until the matter is settled and any Statutes of Limitations expired.
