Duncan Hunter Surprises Pundits In South Carolina Straw Poll
Rick Amato Show ^ | 3/2/07 | Rick Amato

Posted on 03/02/2007 6:41:14 AM PST by pissant

The FOX television talking heads were gushing over the usual suspects- Mitt Romney, Rudy Gulliani and John McCain- when the results of the South Carolina Republican straw poll rolled in and left the pundits stuttering and speechless in mid sentence.

In a surprise result not predicted by any of the national political commentators, California Congressman Duncan Hunterfinished second with 110 votes behind Rudy Gulliani's 123 votes with 71 of the 75 precincts reporting.

Arizona Sen. John McCain was third with 86 votes, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had 59 votes, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback had 68 votes, and Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee rounded out the front-runners with 18 votes.

The underdog Hunter has now taken first in an Arizona straw poll and second in the South Carolina.

The charm of Duncan Hunter is that he is authentic. In a world of hyper-branding and packaging... where politicial speeches sound as if they are the result of focus group studies... Hunter comes across as unscripted, unrehearsed and firm in his beliefs.

...And do not dismiss his unwavering support for Border Patrol Agents Ramos & Compeon. It is the stuff that resonates with people.

As I wrote in The Washington Times back in November, Hunter has a message that connects with republican voters...particularly those in early primary states such as Iowa, South Carolina and New Hampshire. His message is one of peace through strength, conservative social values and conservative illegal immigration policy.

Hey, I'm not whining one way or the other. I just find it interesting that in the midst of posts saying how Rudy supporters NEVER make personal attacks against Hunter, you drop your little schoolyard-level grenade in.

I think a lot of Hunter-bashers just don't "hear" themselves. It may be because a lot of them suffer from insective rectumitis, and that lessens their ability to perceive the hostile nature of their own posts.

I honestly don't think Registered was overly hostile at all. In fact, I was under the impression that we were having a light hearted Friday afternoon thread, which is why I was so surprised when he freaked out like that.

"My ridicule of Hunter isn't on his ideology, but on his chances of winning the contest."

I thought your graphic was funny and no slap at Hunter or his supporters... His polling numbers so far have been almost non-existent.

I hope he climbs, but so far it's been slow.

I'm amazed by the hyper sensitivity of so many on this thread. Some will need to be institutionalized if Hunter has the DEM's unload on him.

Especially in light of what kind of 'RINO bashing' goes out on almost any related thread... and just read some taglines.

(Touchy, touchy)

Ah, the old "Johnny started it" defense. LOL. At least you're consistent.

Believe me, I've seen the bashing going back and forth from both sides. I wish more people could rationally discuss the issues, but I can only be responsible for my own posts.

One interesting thing I can say, though, is that, whereas the Rudy bashers base their "attacks" primarily on things he has actually said or done; most of the anti-Hunter folks have had to rely on playing psychic, predicting what he can't/won't do in terms of increasing his name recognition, fundraising, or just winning the nomination or general election. In fairness, I perceive that that's shifting now that more people are hearing his speeches and investigating his positions, votes, etc. However, substantive criticism of that kind is clearly Plan B, now that he's appearing to start gaining traction; Plan A having been to dismiss his chances based on current polling numbers, and painting those who see broader possibilities for him as kooks.

So with all the months remaining before the primaries, you might want to consider who has more justification for feeling like they're being slammed by the narrow-minded.

He did the officer candidate school at Quantico last summer, and the photo of his blistered foot made me sick. But he topped that by getting a stress fracture a week or two later running downhill with a heavy pack.

I will do anything in my power to ensure that he has the best commander-in-chief in 2008. I will vote against the Democrat. Period.

If you get the opportunity, I highly recommend catching the Marines special that aired on PBS last week. Great production and not a hint of liberal bias. I was shocked.

*can you tell me what Dunce Hunter did for those border patrol*

He put up a resolution and got over 80 reps. to co sponsor to have the President pardon them.

Unlike Rudy who welcomes Illegals

I missed it when it first aired. I'll look to see if it's being shown again.

Bingo! Even though I am a free trade supporter, I can see that Hunter's stances on trade and immigration could bring some union members, latinos, and blacks over to the Republican column. Free trade and illegal immigration HURT low income workers, union members, latinos, and black more than the rest of the electorate. I will ABSOLUTELY SUPPORT HUNTER IF HE CAN WIN WITH THESE ISSUES even when I disagree with him. I am willing to compromise in order to have a conservative Republican president.

Duncan Hunter needs to elaborate more on his economic platform other than merely having "protectionist" tendencies.

"I guess you don't travel much and don't have a concept of the time it takes to travel from California to DC. There's even direct flights!"

You are trying to make a statement about Hunter based on 1 vote that he did not make and ignoring all of votes he did make regarding the right to life, and ignoring the bills he wrote regarding right to lifed, while supporting Rudy who has publicly stated that he is for abortion, would drive a woman to an abortion, and thought Roe v Wade was a proper decision?

I listened to David Gold on KSFO AM560 in SFO today and I was shocked when I thought I'd heard him say that MeCain had edged Hunter out in this contest. Last night I was especially pleased when a KY Democrat I'd been debating with at our big business meeting in Ann Arbor, MI called my room to tell me HE WAS IMPRESSED with Hunter doing this well against MeCain and especially Rudy!!!

So today when David Gold seemed to be saying something else, I wondered if I'd dreamed it, or what! (grin) David had a wonderful show today! I wish you all would have heard it on the internet!!! He's superb!!! We need to convince him that Duncan can beat Rudy. He mentioned the battles here on FR today... We're being watch all over the place!!!

Are you telling us that Duncan Hunter wasn't even aware of the Terri Schiavo situation at the time? How else could he not know he would be needed for a vote at any minute? The rest of us knew it was coming for days.

As for the travel on Sunday bit, I've done exactly that - switched flights cross-country at the last minute on a Sunday afternoon. I didn't bother with online booking because it works more efficiently going straight through the airlines. I have never been unable to get a flight to and from where I needed to be. It costs more, but it can and is often done.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want your company booking flights for my company if you can't get something like that done. It's really not that difficult.

Who side are you one? Do you think that America should demand a level playing field with China in regards to trade? Or is this something that no one should address in the name of Free Trade??
