McInnis draws fire as he moves closer to Senate campaign

Scott McInnis, the former U.S. representative from western Colorado, drew fire for his work for an energy company just as he filed papers declaring his potential interest in the U.S. Senate.

McInnis, a six-term representative, on Monday filed papers for his exploratory committee for the Senate seat being left vacant in 2008 by fellow Republican Wayne Allard.

Front Range-based ProgressNowAction on Tuesday attacked him as “McLobbyist” and derided his actions as a lawyer for EnCana, one of the two biggest drilling companies operating in the Piceance Basin.

The assault was similar to one launched six years ago by Allard supporters against Democrat Tom Strickland as a “lawyer-lobbyist.”

Strickland recruited McInnis to the Denver law firm of Hogan and Hartson when McInnis decided to retire from the House of Representatives.

McInnis dismissed the assault as a left-wing campaign drummed up by supporters of Mark Udall, the Boulder Democrat considering his own bid for Allard’s seat.

“Their hero is Mark Udall, so the last thing I expect them to say is that they appreciate the Sand Dunes or the canyons,” he said, referring to Sand Dunes National Park and McInnis Canyons National Conservation Area.

While no visible Democrat has so far hinted at a challenge to Udall for the Senate nomination, McInnis may face opposition in the August 2008 Republican primary from former Rep. Bob Schaffer, who has not said whether he will run.

I hope Schaffer or McInnis runs, but not both.

Would any Dem, other than Hickenlooper, stand a chance against Udall?

You mean "let's all go sledding and drink hot chocolate rather than plow the roads" Hickenlooper? Or the Hickenlooper whose company hires an illegal alien as a dishwasher, who later ends up killing a cop?

We do not need any more self destructive primaries...

I think McInnis would be a better candidate against Udall. I'm glad to hear he is running.

The Republicans are going to be screwed if McInnis is the best they can come up with. But then, Colorado Republicans have a real talent for shooting themselves in the foot. Look at what happened last go-round. They nominated Pete Coors instead of Schaffer, a real, actual conservative with good political skills, and ran him against Tonto, oh, I mean Salazar, and guess what happened. Colorado votes for the minority in cowboy boots, Tonto, instead of the rich guy in cowboy boots. Surprise. Udall will run rings around McInnis. Schaffer at least has a few principles he won't sell to the highest bidder.

In what way would either of those hurt his chances at winning the Democratic nomination?

Hopefully we will not have a nasty primary again.

Then we can run Schaffer in the next Senate race against Salazar.

Taking your Positive Vitamins, I see. The way the Colorado GOP has been managing things the last few years, I really don't think they have a snowball's chance of stopping Udall unless the Denver Post finds him or a member of his staff (actually more likely) in bed with a 12-year-old boy. For starters, Udall is way ahead on money. Nasty primary is the least of their worries.

Liberals do get pretty mad when they have 6-9 inches of ice on their streets for 7 weeks and they have a hard time getting their Starbucks fix.

I agree we should try to avoid a primary. But Shaffer would not do a Holtzman style campaign, and the way I read McInnis, I don't think he would, either.
