Very interesting that you bring that up. Most of the schools in the Birminhgham area closed anywhere between 11 am to 1:30 pm. I thought the 1:00 closings were hitting it a little close. That said, it was the schools in the more affluent areas that were closing on the early side.
Two vortex tracks near Macon. C0 near Reynolds has a very pronounced hook echo.

CNN now reporting 13 killed.
When you consider how many kids live in unsturdy structures and mobile homes, it would be safer for those kids to be at school. Of course some schools have better places of safety than others. I can think of many schools I would and would not want to be in during weather like this.
In our school district kids are not permitted to drive their cars to school.
You know the moment I heard they let the kids out at 1 I got a feeling it was so they could count it as a full day of school. Hope I'm wrong about that.
Fox News was saying 8 kids were still in the rubble, I though they were in contact with them and trying to dig them out.

I've been watching those. Hail less that 1/2" diameter, speed 39 knots.
Reporting on Fox News now, the 8 dead being related to the high school in some nature.
Which school district, Enterprise? Or ones here in the Bham area.
I'm sure they are allowed to drive to and from school just by judging from the pictures and how many cars were in the parking lot

This tornado went right through the middle of the school...probably where the kids went to "inside wall, duck and cover."
It is a terrible tragedy.
