LA Radio ^ | 3/1/07 | Don Barrett

The artist formerly known as Mr. KABC, Marc Germain joins KTLK as part of a major overhaul of AM1150. Beginning Monday, Mr. K will work afternoon drive for the station.

"Los Angeles is the Number One radio market in the world and demands compelling live/local drive time talk. With Marc's Los Angeles track record [KFI and KABC], coupled with the current success of The Stephanie Miller Show, I now know KTLK AM1150 is set to fulfill that demand." stated Don Martin, program director.

“I will have a producer/sidekick,” said Mr. K by phone yesterday afternoon. “Her name is Lisa Goich. That name will be familiar with L.A. radio listeners from when she had a show on KLSX. She was on middays with J.D., who is a program director in San Diego.”

KTLK is currently the 4th ranked AM radio station in the coveted 25 – 54 persons demo Monday-Friday 6 a.m. – 7 p.m, in Los Angeles.

Mr. KABC did his show without any screeners, guests or topics. The stupidest people called in to talk about worthless minutia.

He's perfect for Left Wing radio.

LA's own Bill Press live 3 a.m. – 6 a.m.

Press has the graveyard shift?

Now we know how much clout the creep really has.

Listening to Press at four in the morning is something only a masochist would do...

This is also one of the stations that Air America Radio paid half a million dollars a year just so they could be broadcast on it.

Technically, NY is the # 1 radio market because it has a larger overall number of radio listeners. However, Los Angeles listeners listen to radio for much longer stretches of time than the average NY listerner (often due to the fact that they are stuck in freeway traffic more than in NY). "Time spent listening" is a critical factor in radio ratings. Therefore, L.A. is often (legitimately) considered to be the real #1 market in the U.S.

That makes some sense. What doesn't make sense is the guy bragging about his lineup. Either he's never listened to them, or he's just out of touch with normal people, the kind most advertisers would like to reach.

The AAR "station" here bounced around the past year, and I think we were one of the original (or near original) areas for it. It didn't do anything for me, and whenever I stopped on the station, the "ads" were PSAs.

Admittedly, my listening sample time was pretty small.

How does that factor with what Howard Stern used to crow about, namely that his listeners (demographically speaking) "listened for longer?" Was that just by NY standards?
