I used to have a British girlfiend and asked her about this, why the Beatles sound "American" when they sing. She said that they didn't. She could hear the British inflection clearly. She also used to tease me about how I said words like "bird" and "paw". I think Brits find our accents "cute". Although she got annoyed when I told her I thought her accent was sexy.

My last girlfiend was from Texas and had a sweet accent. I asked her if she thought the President had an accent. She said no, absolutely not. That made me laugh that she couldn't hear it.

I can hear the British accents in the Beatles and Stones but not in Dire Straits...for an example.
