Many conservatives, including myself, continue to be surprised and impressed by Rudy Giulianis poll numbers. To be sure, hes a very likable candidate, but conventional wisdom insisted that, once he entered the race, his liberal social stances would doom GOP Primary chances.
In fact, a new poll shows Rudy Giuliani doing surprisingly well among Evangelical voters.
Still, it's early, and fair to say that most conservatives dont know the extent of Giulianis positions. Most conservative voters probably dont know, for example, that, as Mayor, Giuliani supported -- not just abortion rights -- but partial-birth abortion. (So far, when it has come up on the trail, Rudy has adeptly parried the questions by changing the subject to safety and security, or by pledging to appoint judges who will be strict constructionists.)
But while many conservatives continue to believe his past positions on social issues will eventually catch up to him, it is much more likely that his past associations will do him far more harm.

Guiliani or McCain. Its like choosing between AIDS and Cancer.
Is Matt Lewis a traiter?
I was referring to the font.
National security trumps social issues, plain and simple.
All the conservative social issues that I care so deeply about won't even be a factor if the western world is overtaken by muslim monsters and subjected to sharia law.
So far, Rudy is the toughest candidate re: the War on Terror. He saw the Sept. 11 attacks up close. He hasn't forgotten.
He gets it. And he may well get my vote.
There was a story I saw posted here about the uneducated voter. I think this may very well be the case here.
In speaking to several conservatives, very few of them could tell me where Giuliani stood on the issues. Many just assumed.
I still think it's early, and that's really the only reason that I can explain the popularity of Rudy or McCain.
Like Reagan, Giuliani is an upbeat, positive guy with firm ideas. He is a proven leader and not a waffler. Is he right on every issue, no, but then who is? Oh, and one more thing, HE ISN`T HILLORAT!
This story is a tempest in a teapot.
He is a proven leader and not a waffler.
Rudy exudes leadership and humor and strength, why he's running away in the polls. The dims are knashing their teeth.
I'm not willing to vote for one liberal to avoid another.
I agree and am no longer going to vote for the lesser of two evils. We've had too many of those "forced choices" over the last twenty+ years and it seems to get only worse. We need leaders who speak the whole, unvarnished truth and don't compromise because of some poll that shows "40% of the American people think X."
For too long conservatives have been taken for granted and coerced with empty threats and false promises. We now have a field of liberals masquerading as Republicans.
Enough. At this point in the 2008 election process a true Reagan Republican could almost walk in and get nominated and would beat a Hilliary Clinton or an Obama.
And don't let a Shawn Hannity or anyone else tell you its already over and we have to choose a Giuliani or some other liberal to represent us.
Does your next Reagan have a name?
Not yet, but it isn't McCain. Did you read the WA Times article about McC?
Who is Matt Lewis?
Matt Lewis is blogger at Townhall.com. He posts on Townhall's main blog at http://www.townhall.com/blog.
It is late so I will google Monsignor Alan Placa tomorrow. Thanks. I always like to check the candidates.
Try googling this: Bracewell Giuliani Washington DC lobbyist. The law firm of Bracewell and Giuliana is lobbying congress for stem cell research. You will find many articles about ethics, values and his judgement here.
