Radio commentator Cedric Maxwell will apologize for saying a female referee should go back to the kitchen, over the air during a Boston Celtics game Monday night on WEEI-AM, a station official said yesterday.
Over the airwaves, the former Celtics forward ordered female referee Violet Palmer to vamoose after she made a controversial call.
Go back to the kitchen, Maxwell said.
That remark resulted in a moment of strained silence before Maxwell re-launched, saying Go in there and make me some bacon and eggs, would you?
Maxwell is an analyst on Entercom Communications Celtics broadcast team.
Cedrics comments about Violet Palmer were a poor attempt at humor, and we dont condone what he said, Jason Wolfe, Entercoms vice president of AM programming and operations in Boston, said in a statement. Cedric will apologize on air during tomorrow nights Celtics broadcast.
Entercom owns both WEEI-AM (850) and WRKO-AM (650). Typically, Celtics games are broadcast on WRKO, but Monday nights game was on WEEI, as tonights will be.
Maxwells remarks sparked outrage on Boston blog aggregator UniversalHub.com yesterday. Maybe I live on a different planet than most of the listenership of the Celtics these days, but I found these comments to be inexcusably sexist, a person going by the name Dave Adams said on the blog.
That post aroused some comments supporting Maxwell and saying he was only making a joke.
Sources said yesterday Maxwell wont face any disciplinary action besides making the public apology. Last November Entercom officials fired WRKO talk show host John DePetro after he called Green Party gubernatorial candidate Grace Ross a fat lesbian on-air.
Cedric "Cornbread" Maxwell, who frequently says "Quack, quack, ku-WHACK!" during his Celtics commentary...
Luckily noone was listening to the Celtics game so noone was insulted.
Oh, I didn't realize that Celtics basketball passed for political commentary/humor.
Wait, I take that back. At 14-42, they are a joke.
Exactly...who will have more wins this year, Dice-K Matsuzaka
(sp?) or the Boston Celtics? Larry Bird's not coming through that door, fans (...and nobody is bothering to listen...)

"Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich says he's planning to file legislation to bring back the Fairness Doctrine, to
curb conservative radio. Unfortunately he made the announcement on Air America Radio, so nobody heard it."

If she can't take it, she should go home to Mommy
The same management that gave newly minted felon Tommy Finneran a morning gig.
"Cornbread" says: "Get your bisquits in the oven and your buns in the bed!"
>>WRKO-AM (650)
Oops, they got the freq wrong, those silly folks at the
Boston...Post :)
Ha! How about Louis Jordan and his Tympany 5, "Beans and
Cornbread"? (they used to use it as a theme song for
"dinner and a movie" on TBS)
Beans and Cornbread,
Beans and Cornbread had a fight.
Beans knocked Cornbread out of sight.
Cornbread said, "Now that's alright, meet me on the corner tomorrow night."
"I'll be ready, I'll be ready tomorrow night,"
That's what Beans said to Cornbread . "I'll be ready tomorrow night.
Cause Beans and Cornbread, they go hand in hand
I gave up on the Celtics many years ago. I still listen to the Bruins on the internet but I have even given up on them and adopted the Hurricanes.
I am really pumped of for the Sox this year.
That's so gay...
Thankfully they will run Red Sox games so they'll make money that way (not that Sox rights came cheap!)
Whatever they do, they should NOT trade Maxwell for Bill Walton. Walton is a far more annoying announcer.
I realize the last time they traded Maxwell for Walton, they won a championship, but that was a long time ago...
Well at least he didn't say he hates gays. That would be a "firing" offense.
Seriously. There must be some kind of matrix with weighted levels of offenses that denote what sanctions should be taken against the offending person.
Blacks: able to make derogatory/personal comments against all others in general, except homos.
White Women: can make derogatory/personal comments against everyone, except blacks and gays.
White Men: can make derogatory/personal comments against NO ONE, unless they are conservative, religious or patriotic Americans, regardless of ethnicity.
John DePetro simply called Grace Ross a lesbian and got fired.
(Now working back in his native area of Providence RI
at WPRO AM)
What is it with everybody apologizing all the time? Why not just say "I said what I think, other people disagree, so be it"?
...Former Red Sox player Steve Lyons got fired by Fox for making remarks--joking--that implied that colleague Lou Piniella
stole his wallet, IIRC...
Back in 94 I played in a City Rec League tournament and Violet Palmer was one of the referees.
