TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- The average property tax bill in New Jersey topped more than $6,300 last year, a 7 percent hike over what was already the nation's highest property taxes, new state figures show.

Gov. Jon S. Corzine and legislators spent five months last year trying to cut property taxes, but the average bill still rose - from $5,914 in 2005 to $6,331 last year, according to numbers compiled by the state Department of Community Affairs.

The previous year, the state's property taxes - used to fund most county, municipal and school operations - increased by 7.3 percent.

In all, $20.9 billion in property taxes were collected in 2006 in New Jersey, where property taxes are twice the national average.

Many countires do not have property taxes, only sales tax.

This most unfair tax should be called the "You never own property, you just rent it from the government" tax and it is live and well in this country.

Anybody know any states or counties that have no property taxes?

"The average property tax bill in New Jersey topped more than $6,300 last year"

Why do they keep voting for people who do that to them?

"It's for the children."

It (Taxes) takes a village quadruple, triple and double the rate of inflation to raise a child every year. Hillary Clinton's (Or her ghost writer) compassion and intellect taught us all that one.

Apply political logic. They didn't raise them as much as they would have been raised otherwise; therefore property taxes were actually cut.

Combine that with your sales and state income taxes, I wouldn't bother to work/live there.

FL is looking to possibly abolish property taxes altogether and raising the state sales tax to 8%. I am all for it. I would have to buy over $7100 per month in taxable goods to break even with my current property taxes and my millage rate is 2.1%

Just like Bubba,

I tried to cut your taxes but I just couldn't do it. Instead I'm going to raise them retroactively from January 1sT 1993.
