It was probably the most shocking thing in my life. Its chilling. Its amazing. - The Rev. Al Sharpton, on learning that his enslaved ancestors were once owned by relatives of Sen. Strom Thurmond.
I am a big-time Strom Thurmond-basher from way back. Before his death in 2003 (due, it is speculated, to the failure of the Disney animatronics used to maintain the illusion of motion), I repeatedly begged my fellow South Carolinians to stop embarrassing themselves by re-electing this unreconstructed fossil.
After Thurmond passed, I noted that he did so having never publicly rejected - or even acknowledged - his racist legacy.
But there is one insult so mean-spirited and unfair that even I will not use it against Strom: Linking him to the Rev. Al Sharpton.
When the New York Daily News discovered that Sharptons enslaved grandfather had been owned by distant members of the Thurmond family, the reverend (who wants a DNA test) claimed it was probably the most shocking thing in my life.
You want shocking? How about the Daily News line that Sharpton ran for president in 2004 on a ticket of racial justice?

I picked up that line also. I wondered how Al and racial justice could appear in the same article.
Let me guess - Strom Thurman left an estate,,,, and Al Sharpton found out?
"After Thurmond passed, I noted that he did so having never publicly rejected - or even acknowledged - his racist legacy."
A condition that Robert Byrd maintains today.
ping
this story keeps on crackin' me up!
If all the Thurmonds were like Strom then we must all have that DNA.
Ya know, it's stories like this that reinforce the fact that God has a sense of humor.
A DNA test?
To what end?
Do you really think anyone (if by some ridiculous stretch of the imagination) would admit to having a kindred relationship with the likes of your nasty, bigoted, racist person?
Or are you going after the money, "Reverend"?
I know that Mr. Thurmond left a couple of dollars in his estate.
Is that it, "Reverend", is that what it's all about?
Surely you don't want to just be able to call Strom "Daddy", now do you?
Sharpton makes me sick.
I am amazed at the number of good black people that hang on this fool's every word, never seeing the hypocrisy, bigotry and racism of the man.
Strom Thurmond changed (or at least gave the appearance of changing) his racist views late in life. Do you think Sharpton ever will?
Al's Grandpa probably was born between 1890-1900.
Maybe he meant great-grandfather, that may go back to before 1864.
Truth be Told , this fat jerk should be in prison for the Tawana Brawley Phony Rape Case.
And while the Philadelphia Courts are considering disallowing christians to protest at Homosexual parades and might give them 11 years in prison, how many times did this Idiot Sharpton close the brooklyn Bridge and other public ways with no more than a slap on the wrist.
This story is Ho Hum Claptrap playing into this race hustlers hand.
I wonder if a list of the "black establishment" and their academic records have ever been assembled in one place. It amazes me that black activists have such a poor record of optimizing the benefits that they strive so mightily for. They have not achieved in the areas of education, business, science, etc. There higher academic achievements are common at best. While preaching about lofty goals, they have settled for mediocrity. When compared to so many accomplished black leaders in their chosen fields, they are shown for the hucksters that they are. In fact, if people of color do succeed, they are too white, or not one of us, or not the right kind of black. How pathetic.
The too unsubtle message is not to take advantage of what is available, but decry the lack of more opportunities and ask for more money.
You can bet Rev. Al is angling for a hand out and not a hand up.
I knew the Donkey Party was 100% morally bankrupt when they allowed Sharpton to appear on a Dem platform as a PRESIDENTIAL!!! candidate. I was convinced most Dems would see this and draw the appropriate conclusions. I was wrong. The chairman of the local Dem party in my area positively beamed about Sharpton after returning from a Dem Party confab in Washington before the 2004 election. His candidacy said as much about Dem voters as it did about him.
Sharpton should be in prison not only for Tawana Brawley but chiefly for his odious role in the Freddy's Fashion Mart riot in NYC a few years after the Brawley fiasco. Seven people were killed after Sharpton incited a crowd to violence after pronouncing non-Black proprietors in a mostly Black neighborhood as "white interlopers". A deranged man in the audience then went out and set fire to the store mentioned above killing a number of the patrons. He should be spending the rest of life in the Crossbar Hotel for a myriad of offences.
AMEN !!
