"Our advice to Rudy: tell the NRA and its minions that you will not be cowed, and stick to your guns: you are a strong supporter of the rights of law-abiding citizens to own firearms. But rights come with responsibilities. And anyone who isnt responsible about owning, selling, or using their guns should lose those rights......"
Good advice. Rudy won't kow-tow to any lobby, IMO. The NRA is making a mistake by backing the nutballs who want to own and sell assault rifles used in combat. This is nuts!! And Rudy is right.

Gun-rights activists are nutballs? This country was founded by gun-rights activists. And will be undone by the likes of you if left unchecked.
And Rudy is right.
I see you've joined the cult of personality big-time as well.

Third Way is a non-profit, non-partisan strategy center for progressives.
In other words, they are liberals. So much for despising them - you think like them. Unless, of course, you despise yourself, in which case all this would make sense.

***The purpose of owning guns is for self protection and having a militia (cheap, fast, quickly available army) ready for when there is trouble. The purpose of a gun (other than hunting, which isn't part of the 2nd amendment, contrary to rudy's amazingly skewed legal perspective) is to shoot people, in defense of self. An assault rifle is just more efficient at doing what guns do. The traditional cutoff between militia weapons and army weapons was cannons/artillery, and the AR15 is certainly not a cannon nor artillery. If people like you have this little regard for the constitution and the checks & balances of power, then we leave ourselves open for any kind of fast-talking tin-horn dictator to step in & take over after a "national emergency". Wait, that sounds a lot like rudy. So that's why you like him so much.

You obviously don't know about guns. The so-called assault rifles your hero wants to ban are not "used in combat." They are not automatic weapons. They are merely defined as "assault weapons" by folks who want to ban all guns. Repeat: these are not military weapons!

Katie, a gun isn't an assault weapon just because it looks like a gun that is used in combat. All of the weapons sold to civilians in the US fire a single bullet every time you pull the trigger. This is called a "semiautomatic" rifle, and the technology has been around about 100 years. they are in common use for hunting and target shooting and have been for generations.
The actual assault weapons" the army uses offer "select fire" capability which means they fire multiple bullets with a single pull of the trigger. These are HIGHLY restricted for civilians in the US. The weapons that look similar to actual "assault rifles" aren't really assault rifles, just semiautomatic rifles with similar trigger and barrel designs. And I state this plainly because I don't want you to misunderstand... they may look the same, but they absolutely are not. they cannot be easily modified to fire select fire, and it is illegal for someone to modify them to operate in select fire mode even if they have the know how to make the complex changes. The firearms being sold to civilians and are being mistakenly called by that name because of a media that loves to hyperbolize things. Another example would be that they often call hollow point bullets "cop killers" and imply that they slide right through a bullet proof vest when the exact opposite is true.
You shouldn't make snap judgments about what's going on the gun owning community until you learn something about the technology of firearms. The media flaps their gums first, and learns the facts later. IMHO, you should aspire to know more about it than that.
