An inconvenient truth: eco-warrior Al Gore's bloated gas and electricity bills
· Household consumption 20 times national average
· Supporters claim smear campaign after Oscars win

Al Gore knows a thing or two about the vicissitudes of public life. Six years ago he was virtually written off as a has-been vice-president after he won the popular vote only to lose the 2000 race for the White House. On Sunday night his rehabilitation was completed as he was crowned the moral mouthpiece of Hollywood, receiving an Oscar for his global warming documentary An Inconvenient Truth.
In front of the cream of the movie industry and the world's cameras, he stood alongside fellow eco-warrior Leonardo DiCaprio and proclaimed the ceremony the first in the Academy Awards' history to be run on "environmentally intelligent" lines. "And you know what?" he told the adoring crowd. "It's not as hard as you might think. We have a long way to go but all of us can do something in our own lives to make a difference."
Twenty four hours is a long time in green politics. By Monday night Mr Gore found himself back in that all-too familiar place - the eye of the storm. A little-known group based in his home state, the Tennessee Centre for Policy Research, had the idea of looking up Mr Gore's energy bills for his large home in the Belle Meade area of Nashville to see whether he practised what he preached.
The headline figures, released to the group under federal freedom of information rules, were striking. Last year the Gore household consumed 221,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity - more than 20 times the national annual average.

Somebody's got to spread the word, you know.
Does he drive a prius? If he does, then that would even things out a little.
Just a little.
How inconveeeeeenient....
Agree.
What he pontificates is just for the little people. As a crusader for the global warming creed, he can be forgiven his little indiscretions in contributing to the cause dujour. Jetting around in carbon emitting aircraft and speeding along in his SUV convoys is just the price the world must pay for getting the message out.
It's really ok.
Algore is sending me money every month in return for:
I agree not to travel in private jets every time he does (Carbon trading).
I allocate one day a month to feel his guilt.
I'm not sure which is worse.
"Shut the damned door! Whaddya tryina do, air-condition the whole world?"
Yep, he bought carbon offsets, so it's okay
to spew carbon.
His followers are all going to stop
buying gasoline today too.
It is the Clinton camp.
I have followed Gore for many years, for no other reason than I could not figure him out (and inquiring minds need to know). He seems to be a strongly driven person, but one who needs a cause. In 2000, his cause was to become president didnt happen. Now he has a new, all consuming, cause and he will go all out for his cause until he loses, than he will pick up another crusade, etcetera, ad infinitum.
The Guardian is just following orders from Hitlery and her winged monkeys.
Worth reading the original article. Some amusing nuggets.
"The Gores were installing solar panels on the roof of their home, Ms Kreider added, and making efforts to reduce their energy needs. Besides, Mr Gore had adopted a 'carbon neutral' life whereby any emissions for which he was personally responsible were offset by buying green credits such as parcels of forests."
Isn't that noble? Al Gore is laying off his personal carbon emissions by buying large parcels of land! How very selfless of him. All of us should do that!
And I suppose he's probably buying even MORE land to offset the toxic waste dump on his family farm!
"Al Gore" and "bloated" seem to go together so well...
Only millionaires are entitled to air conditioning. We peons should sweat and use candles if we can't afford "carbon offsets". Is that really the message they want to try and put out there?
I like the "carbon credit" concept. I think we should all consume as much as we damn well please and then pay an outfit that hires illegal aliens to plant a bunch of hemp to counter our pollution.... Then before long we'll all quit consuming and just stay home to get polluted.
(I'm just kidding)
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
How bloody prescient of him. The other climatologists were just giving up global cooling.
Between that and inventing the internet, I think the man deserves his 221 Megawatts - (which is just about 20 times what our family of six uses.)
Mrs VS
Megawatt-hours, I meant. But why not put a power plant on line for his own personal use - keep him busy neutralizing all that carbon.
