>>Many parents are not fully qualified -

Who taught those parents?<<<

In many cases the public schools have had serious problems for long enough that the parents were also hurt by the public schools.

But no how well educated the parents are, most people are not qualified to do a good job of teach all high school subjects. And they never will be.

For example, I went to one of the top private high schools (which happens to be conservative and Christian). Then I got a good degree from a pretty good school and went to grad school in two different areas and then I taught multiple subjects at a good private high school and became department head in both math and science. So I'd be a good home school teacher, right?

I happen to be a natural teacher but many parents are not. And there are plenty of high school subjects I should not be teaching -biology, any foreign language, any kind of art or music, English etc...

My wife is also well educated but she should not teach any kind of math or science.

Now imagine the parents aren't as well educated as they would like their kids to be or maybe their kids want to be something completely different than their parent - like if my kids wanted to be a doctor - nobody in my house knows biology well enough to help them.

Or maybe the parents both have to work or or they are widowed or divorced and there is no parent available to teach..

In the end, home schooling should be a choice but not the only choice. That's why we need good school and parents need choices in short, we need vouchers to provide parents with the choice to send their kids to a good school.

Here in Georgia we almost got a bill to let parents of kids trapped in schools rated as failing for three years or more to change schools but we were out-lobbied by the teacher's union. We need to keep trying.

Sorry. I disagree. We need to make parents responsible for raising their own children and that includes educating them. If parents are too ignorant to teach their children themselves then they should hire those of you that wish to be tutors to do the job. The US Government has no business in the business of educating children and I shouldn't be forced to pay to educate those children whose parents are not qualified to teach.

You said, "We need to keep trying." All "trying" is is an excuse to fail. As the great Master Yoda once said, "Do or do not do but do NOT try."

Folks... If you love your children you will teach them yourself.
