McInnis testing waters for possible Senate campaign

Ex-congressman files paperwork, says unity is key.

Former Colorado Rep. Scott McInnis took a first formal step Monday toward running for the seat being vacated by U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard...

The Grand Junction Republican announced he is forming an exploratory committee and has filed necessary paperwork. He said he does not expect to make a formal announcement until later this year.

"We're at the very beginning of this,"...

McInnis said he is starting to assemble a campaign...

McInnis has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the seat since Allard announced in January that he would keep a term-limit pledge and step down in 2008. Other possible GOP candidates include former congressmen Bob Schaffer and Bob Beauprez, Attorney General John Suthers, and radio talk show host Dan Caplis.

On the Democratic side, congressman Mark Udall also is weighing a run for the seat.

McInnis said no matter who ends up being the GOP candidate, he hopes the party can avoid another divisive primary.

"No question. I think the party needs to unify as quickly as it can," he said.

If we expect to win, we need to observe the 11th commandment.

Speak no evil of another republican.

If Scott's the guy, as looks increasingly likely, I'll enthusiastically support him, especially over Udall.

But, honestly, I'm getting tired of the current politico fad of going on "listening" tours.

McInnis looks like he's running, any news on Schaffer? (I hope only McInnis runs)

They have been talking.

I doubt both would run at the same time for the same job.

We have made that same mistake too many times lately.

IMO

That has a nice sound...

" Shaffer for Gov."

or even the other senator instead of Salazar.

I'd gladly take either one!

We don't have a completely empty bench, though, Coffman is a bright spot as is Suthers.

Hopefully we can get going for the 2008 elections. We need to put a better organization for the state house and state senate.

Josh Penry is looking better. Hopefully he can join Coffman and others to regain the legislature.

Scott McInnis is a good organizer; he sat out the Coors and Beauprez races...which I am not happy about. But he should have some coat tails in his old state and federal seats as well as in other races if he wants to.

You and me both. Fact is I was surprised he decided to get into this race.

I couldn't agree more we need much better organization (and funding) for the legislative races. The Dems have out-spent and out-organized us the last few elections. And it would help if we would quit cutting ourselves up.

Scott always said how much he disliked DC politics inside the beltway. He slept in his office, then worked out and showered in the congressional gym...then returned to Colorado if he was not traveling elsewhere.

I though that he would run for governor before senator.

He needed to be with his family these last few years ( kids becoming young adults, etc...).
