I just bought a new Kimber Ultra Carry II with night sights and laser grips. Haven't had a chance to actually shoot it yet but it's a nice looking gun. A bit pricey. If you're just looking for a home defense weapon and can only get one, I'd go with a 12 gauge pump like a Mossberg 500 instead of a handgun. If you're set on a hand gun I'd recommend a .357 revolver. Reliable with plenty of stopping power and you can shoot .38 Spl. for practice. You can get a decent one for around $300.

a pump was going to be my follow up question ... you like the Mossberg?

"... you like the Mossberg?"

I'm a big Mossberg fan. I've had 3 over the years.

One additional thought. There's been a lot of contention on this thread about a handgun vs. a shotgun for home defense. I come down somewhere in the middle. I sleep with both nearby. If I (or my wife) hear a noise downstairs in the middle of the night, I'll investigate with a handgun. However if someone is kicking on my door and I have time I'll be carrying the Mossberg. As someone stated way up thread, there's nothing quite like the sound of racking a pump shotgun. It would stop anyone but a lunatic before they got through the door. If he is a lunatic, then that's what the double-ought buck is for.
