I'd recommend you seek professional help in the form of a handgun training class before you buy anything. You'll be able to make a better informed decision and your instructor will probably be happy to help you decide what is best for your needs. Knowing you personally, his advice would be much more valuable than mine.

Go with the Mossberg 500 Mariner shotgun for your locale and situation. Not bad to have with you if you are out in a boat in those waters. Back it up with a .357 magnum revolver. Also, has anyone mentioned tactical lights? Helps to see what you are shooting in the dark. You have to live with the consequences after the shoot. Range time is good but practicing for the real thing is better. Check out IDPA There is an affiliate in Key Largo. That will be the best investment you can make, bar none.
